What is the Trinity?

The word "trinity" is a term used to denote the Christian doctrine that God exists as a unity of three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  Each of the persons is distinct from the other, yet identical in essence.  In other words, each is fully divine in nature, but each is not the totality of the other persons of the Trinity.  Each has a will, loves, and says "I", and "You" when speaking.  The Father is not the same person as the Son who is not the same person as the Holy Spirit who is not the same person as the Father.  Each is divine, yet there are not three gods, but one God.  There are three individual subsistences, or persons.  The word "subsistence" means something that has a real existence. The word "person" denotes individuality and self awareness.  The Trinity is three of these, though the latter term has become the dominant one used to describe the individual aspects of God known as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Included in the doctrine of the Trinity is a strict monotheism which is the teaching that there exists in all the universe a single being known as God who is self-existent and unchangeable (Isaiah 43:10; 44:6,8).  Therefore, it is important to note that the doctrine of the trinity is not polytheistic as some of its critics proclaim.  Trinitarianism is monotheistic by definition and those who claim it is polytheistic demonstrate a lack of understanding of what it really is.
    The Trinity
      God is three persons
      Each person is divine
      There is only one God.
Many theologians admit that the term "person" is not a perfect word to describe the three individual aspects/foci found in God.   When we normally use the word person, we understand it to mean physical individuals who exist as separate beings from other individuals.  But in God there are not three entities, nor three beings.  God, is a trinity of persons consisting of one substance and one essence.  God is numerically one. Yet, within the single divine essence are three individual subsistences that we call persons.
Each of the three persons is completely divine in nature though each is not the totality of the Godhead.
Each of the three persons is not the other two persons.
Each of the three persons is related to the other two, but are distinct from them.
The word "trinity" is not found in the Bible. But this does not mean that the concept is not taught there. The word "bible" is not found in the Bible either, but we use it anyway. Likewise, the words "omniscience," which means "all knowing," "omnipotence," which means "all powerful," and "omnipresence," which means "present everywhere," are not found in the Bible either. But we use these words to describe the attributes of God.  So, to say that the Trinity isn't true because the word isn't in the Bible is an invalid argument.

Is there subordination in the Trinity?

There is, apparently, a subordination within the Trinity in regard to order but not substance or essence.  We can see that the Father is first, the Son is second, and the Holy Spirit is third. The Father is not begotten, but the Son is (John 3:16). The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father (John 5:26).  The Father sent the Son (1 John 4:10).  The Son and the Father send the Holy Spirit (John 14:26; 15:26).  The Father creates (Isaiah 44:24), the Son redeems (Gal. 3:13), and the Holy Spirit sanctifies (Rom. 15:16).
This subordination of order does not mean that each of the members of the Godhead are not equal or divine.  For example, we see that the Father sent the Son.  But this does not mean that the Son is not equal to the Father in essence and divine nature.  The Son is equal to the Father in his divinity, but inferior in his humanity.  A wife is to be subject to her husband but this does not negate her humanity, essence, or equality.  By further analogy, a king and his servant both share human nature. Yet, the king sends the servant to do his will.  Jesus said, "For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me" (
John 6:38).  Of course Jesus already is King, but the analogy shows that because someone is sent, it doesn't mean they are different than the one who sent him.
Critics of the Trinity will see this subordination as proof that the Trinity is false. They reason that if Jesus were truly God, then He would be completely equal to God the Father in all areas and would not, therefore, be subordinate to the Father in any way.  But this objection is not logical.  If we look at the analogy of the king and in the servant we certainly would not say that the servant was not human because he was sent.  Being sent does not negate sameness in essence. Therefore, the fact that the Son is sent does not mean that He is not divine any more than when my wife sends me to get bread, I am not human.

Is this confusing?

Another important point about the Trinity is that it can be a difficult concept to grasp.  But this does not necessitate an argument against its validity.  On the contrary, the fact that it is difficult is an argument for its truth.  The Bible is the self revelation of an infinite God.  Therefore, we are bound to encounter concepts which are difficult to understand -- especially when dealing with an incomprehensible God who exists in all places at all times.  So, when we view descriptions and attributes of God manifested in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, we discover that a completely comprehensible and understandable explanation of God's essence and nature is not possible.  What we have, however, done is derive from the Scripture the truths that we can grasp and combine them into the doctrine we call The Trinity.  The Trinity is, to a large extent, a mystery.  After all, we are dealing with God Himself.
It is the way of the cults to reduce biblical truth to make God comprehensible and understandable by their minds.  To this end, they subject God's word to their own reasoning and end in error.
The following verses are often used to demonstrate that in the doctrine of the Trinity is indeed biblical.
Matt. 28:18, Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
1 Cor. 12:4-6, Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6And there are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons.
2 Cor. 13:14, The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.
Eph. 4:4-7, There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. 7But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ's gift.
1 Pet. 1:2, "according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, that you may obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in fullest measure."
Jude 20-21, "But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith; praying in the Holy Spirit; 21keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life."

Wow !!! Can't believe that you tackled this subject not many will. Anyway... what has helped me to understand the trinity is that the Trinity does not reflect three separate entities of God. For example The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are not three different separate individuals, but what they are is the three different ways in which one God manifest himself to us. Each existence of God has it's separate reason for existing. Only God could create something so complex but yet so Simple. People, in trying to reason the trinity have made it complicated.

Now I have read so many things on the Trinity and Modalism. It is really easy to get the two confused but what is distinctive between the two is whether or not you believe that the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost can exist at the same time but yet be separate but of One being.

For example in Modalism, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are each other they are all the same, which means that all three will not exist at the same time. But in the Trinity, its God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost . The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost will never be each other because they are separate manifestations of the one God.

Now I have read several articles that state that in the bible the three never exist at one time. However this is not true. See Matthew 3:16-17. It distinctively have the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost existing at one time serving three different but yet one purpose. The word of God is awesome... If we truly read the bible we will completely dispel so many so called mysteries of the Bible.

Scripture Reference:

The Baptism of Jesus(New America Standard Bible)

13 Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?” 15 But Jesus answering said to him, “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he permitted Him. 16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, 17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.

Awesome blog, my brother! This actually goes right along with two blogs I wrote: "Oneness vs Trinity.....Let GOD Speak" & "Oneness vs Trinity...Let The Fathers Speak"

The first uses 24 OT & NT scriptures proving the GOD of our creation are a Holy Trinity instead of the Oneness doctrine. The second blog proves the same, using the Epistles of the Apostolic Forefathers of the church (Ignatius, Clement, Tertullian, ect.) Check it out some time.

Be blessed, speak blessed.....
to be a blessing, & speak a blessing.....

The Bible speaks of only one God. Jesus is God. God took human form inorder to redeem us.

Jesus foretold by the Prophet Isaiah -

Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The MIGHTY GOD, The EVERLASTING FATHER, The Prince of Peace.

Jesus (God in the flesh)

John:1 In the beginning was the WORD, and the WORD was with God, and the WORD was God.

2The same was in the beginning with God.

3ALL things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

10He was in the world, and the world was MADE by him, and the world knew him not.

11He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

14And the WORD WAS MADE FLESH, and dwelt among us

In Mathew Jesus gives the instructions of baptisim.

Matt:18And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the NAME of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

These are the instructions. Remember that he said ( Teaching them to OBSERVE ALL THINGS) Also remember that (NAME) is a singular noun.

Now after being instructed in the way to baptize, what did they do?
The Acts of the Apostles records the Actions taken by the Apostles upon being instructed by Jesus or the carrying out of the instructions given bt Jesus.

So after Matt:28:19 (Instruction), How did they Baptize?

Here's How
Acts: 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

This scripture supports that the name (singular noun) of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost is Jesus.

God is not a Voltron of three different persons, but one person who operates in three different capacities. Confused? If I told you to go baptize in the NAME of THE FATHER of Jenna Bush, SON of George H.W. Bush and the 42nd President of the United States what NAME would you baptize in? None of the above right? Because the Name of this person is different from the capacities in which he opereates. The NAME would be George W. Bush.

The Apostles started off almost all their epistles by naming "GOD the Father & the LORD JESUS Christ", showing a deliberate separation in speech:

-1st Corinthians 1:1-3
-2nd Corinthians 1:1-3
-Galatians 1:1-3
-Ephesians 1:1-3
-Philippians 1:1-2
-Colossians 1:1-3
-1st Thessalonians 1:1-5
-2nd Thessalonians 1:1-2
-1st Timothy 1:1-2
-2nd Timothy 1:1-2
-Titus 1:1-4
-Philemon 1:1-3
-Hebrews chapters 1 & 2
-James 1:1
-1st Peter 1:1-3
-2nd Peter 1:1-2
-Revelation 1:1-6

JESUS Himself also said "to your Father, and MY Father, to your GOD ,and MY GOD", a CLEAR distinction!

It is well said brothers. The lips of the wise drip honey, which is the teaching of the one true catholic faith (and I do not mean Roman, but universal) and the revelation of Christ Jesus. I have for you only one small matter of temporal knowledge, and it is a very small thing. Omnipotence is used in Jerome's Vulgate where we have our English word Almighty. Also, while librum is used in the Vulgate and not bibli, in Greek it is biblos. Like I said, a very small temporal matter. Therefore I praise you very highly for teaching Christ crucified, for proclaiming Christ raised, and for instructing the saints in the Gospel of our Lord. Amen good sirs. The Lord is with you.

Richman "It's Jesus EP" coming March

The trinity vs. Oneness....Both need to be careful.....I do believe that there is a distinction in the Godhead or a relation. ....One thing i believe trinity and oneness believers truly mess up is this; They try to call GOD a person...God is not a PERSON he is a SPIRIT. The bible does reference him to "person" attributes at times, and that is so that use human can even have some time of comprehension of God.....[John 4:24]..God is Spirit...john 1:18...no man has seen this spirit...deut 4:12-20...Do not liken God as anything....When start to liken God as trinity or oneness we limit him and we began to worship a "titled doctrine" and not the one true God.......It was the LORD who has done all things by himself and for himself...The LORD- which means the self existing Spirit..God is the LORD.[ps 100:3] ....So our God is the self existing SPIRIT.....Then we find in john 1:1, the operation and construction of God of the old testament.....The Word-this is NOT the Son of God, and there is NOT one scripture in the bible that says the Word is.....the Word-"logos" thought...the consciences of mental faculty "imagination of God"....Why does the bible call the Word "he" so that we as human can relate and comprehend. Because we understand it is NOT 2 different persons/people God and Word Jesus made this clear ..[john 8:42, 16:27-28]...Jesus not speaking about the body he was in, but who he really was...the Word.......The Word- that "thought" that "imagination" was made into man/ it took on human nature...and we beheld "his" glory... You can now call the Word made flesh, a man....why? Because God begotten it into a man, the Word made flesh..the holy thing (baby Jesus) is the Son of God, not the Word alone.., BUT Word made flesh-is the son of God........thats how you have your distinctions between father and son...i would love to hear some feedback on this subject feel free to message me on the space! ....Love all!

Very well put Richman......I like your approach to the subject. Yeah, I know I am late. But that's the power of written words, no matter when you write them, to the reader it was just yesterday.
