Thursday, September 10, 2009
Hi Friends -  You know I must be in Nashville if I'm sending this blog. The manager always likes me to sit and visit here with you and I'm glad to do it because I enjoy the chance to tell you what's going on. It's been a good , busy week so far.  Ms. Rhonda Vincent and I shot a video last night for our new single "Staying Together".  The video director is Stephen Shepherd who most recently shot the new Chris Young video ("Little Black Dress").  He has shot videos for lots of big stars including Gary Allan, Joe Nichols and many others.  I hope you like it when it comes out in a couple of weeks.  We'll try to announce it's debut here .
Today I enjoyed having lunch with Rhonda and her manager/husband. We went to one of my favorite restaurants , the type which in the South is called a Meat n' Three. I know you probably know that but I find lots of folks outside the South have no idea what I'm talking about.  Our photographer for the new album is from Minneapolis and he had no idea about that term so we had to go to one after the shoot.  It's just all about some good country cookin'!
I'm just about to go to the Grand Ole Opry to do a soundcheck/rehearsal for their Country Classics night.  I'm supposed to be on around 7:45PM tonight. If you can, listen in on WSM-AM Radio.  This is a "movie theme" night.   So I'm singing Paper Rosie.  The tie in to the movie theme is that Paper Rosie was in the opening scene in the movie "48 Hours" with Nick Nolte/Eddie Murphy.  My other song will be Willie Nelson's "On The Road Again".  Now if you love a challenge, listen out for that. I 'll have to see if I can remember all the words and I've never sung it onstage so it will be a first.
Guess that's all for today.  Just want to say a big thank you for all the kind notes you've left about my new album.  I always appreciate hearing from you and I really take to heart what you say about the music .   Take care and I'll be singing for you tonight at the Opry.   Always , Gene

Hi Gene....

Always good to hear from ya. Wish I could be there in Nashville, but I've got my own gig to do tonight. LOL!

Anyway, it's awesome that you're still on the road and creating new music, not content just to rest on your laurels even after all these years. I've been listening to you since I was a kid. The first record of yours that I had was "14 Carat Mind"...got it when I was 7 years old, and from there I even discovered your earlier stuff like "Farewell Party", "Paper Rosie", "Love In the Hot afternoon" and so on. But it's your stuff from the 80's that I grew up on and remember fondly.

I've heard some of the cuts off the new album, and if radio doesn't play it, All I have to say is THEY'RE NUTS! That's some of the best stuff you've recorded in years! Way better than your last album in my opinon(Which was good, but didn't really sound like YOU per se). Don't get me wrong...I love what's going on in country today, and the fact that it seems to have quite a convincing rock edge that somehow doesn't get in the way of the country. But there'll always be a particular place in my heart for good 'ol unabashed classic country with a solid storyline in the lyrics. Of all the kinds of music I get off on(and I like most of everything except rap-Hahaha!), It's classic country like yours that, to this day, stirs my emotions the most everytime I hear it, taking me back to my childhood, to my early days as an upstart musician in my teens, playing this stuff in VFW halls and dive bars with my old man, and literally bringing tears to my eyes and shivers to my spine. Enough said.

I hate to sound like I'm putting you on a pedestal, but guys like you wo are still around and kicking butt should be held in regard as national treasures. And if you're touring sched. should  ever bring you down central fl. way, and my own gig schedule permits, I will DEFINATELY make it a point to come and see you.

Have a good week, and I hope the new album does well for ya.

Love you, Gene.

Wish I were in Nashville!
Will try to listen to the Opry but I think I can't with the computer I am using right now. Forgot mine in Slovakia while taking the young talented Billy Ryan around, that's life out on the road I guess :-)

Take care,
greetings from germany,
Jutta

Hey Gene,
Been trying to get to someone for months to set up an interview for our little newspaper here right outside of Bristol where you will be this Sat. at Rythm and Roots. I have been saddened because no one would get back to me.  We were such good friends several years ago I thought at least I would have gotten a reply.
Love the new album.
