Well, I popped my New York City cherry last night, and it was GREAT. 
I really wasn't sure what to expect from my first New York performance last night. Sure, I had been there numerous times as a tourist and to visit friends and family, but this time I was up on a stage at Rockwood Music Hall, a bright light shining on my head, a small group of hip New Yorkers staring at me from the bar.

I went into performing New York with a "macro" mindset: "I'm in the Big Apple," I thought. "I'm in the big time."  But I left New York with a much more "micro" perspective: behind the inanimate skyscrapers, glitzy facade and the bragging rights that come with playing NYC, I discovered the welcoming warmth and positive attitude towards indie music (and musicians) that New Yorkers possess. 

The beautiful thing about Rockwood Music Hall is that the street-facing wall is one big glass window, so passers-by can see who is playing on stage and decide to pop in randomly to listen.  New Yorkers are so open to checking out new music that they will actually stop in the middle of their stroll on the street and listen.

And not only will they listen intently, they will clap appreciatively, sincerely laugh at your jokes, and generously open their wallets.  At the start of the night, I felt as if I had a big "NON-NEW YORKER" sticker stuck to my forehead for all to see.  But by the end of the night, the crowd made me feel right at home.

So thanks New York.  You were great, and I can't wait to do it with you again! ;)
