Category: Parties and Nightlife
Known as the “Family Reunion Day of the Year,” Independence Day (and the days surrounding) are some of the most active for families in Cleveland Plus.  With fireworks, parades, burgers and dogs galore, check out some of the area’s red, white and blue happenings.

DOWNTOWN CLEVELAND
Star Spangled-Spectacular Community Concert and Festival  – July 2
Considered one of the world’s greatest orchestras, The Cleveland Orchestra puts on a heck of a show every summer to celebrate Independence Day.  In fact, more than 80,000 people visit Public Square to watch this free concert that includes a program of patriotic favorites and popular classical repertoire.
Since 2003, the event has included a pre-concert festival featuring performances by Cleveland-based musical groups in the hours leading up to the Orchestra concert. And this year is no different, with acts like 7 Mile Isle steel drum band and What’s Next Quartet performing throughout the day.
In addition to the musical performances, Tower City Center offers a free arts festival inside the mall from 10am – 7pm featuring handmade works of local and national artisans.
The music begins at 5pm and ends with a spectacular display of fireworks set against the Cleveland skyline.
The Cleveland Orchestra has delivered an outstanding Fourth of July show for almost 20 years. The backdrop of fireworks is simply the icing on the cake.
Fireworks Cruise on Goodtime III – July 4, 7pm-11pm

WEST SIDE
Lakewood Parade and Fireworks – July 4
When I first moved to Lakewood, I immediately felt welcomed into the community after experiencing the Lakewood Fourth of July Parade just a few steps from my house.  I love inviting friends, relatives and co-workers to this annual event that really highlights what I envision to be the perfect neighborhood.
The parade steps off at 10am on July 4 at Kenneth Avenue and runs east on Lake Avenue to Lakewood Park. After the parade, festivities continue in Lakewood Park with games, food and activities provided by many of Lakewood’s nonprofit organizations.
Around 7pm that night, bring a blanket down to Lakewood Park to enjoy the music put on by The Lakewood Project (Lakewood High School’s Youth Rock Orchestra). And, at dusk, lay back and enjoy the fireworks display.
SOUTH + AKRON
Red, White & Zoo – July 2, 10am-7pm
Everyone’s invited to celebrate Independence Day along with the red, white and blue creatures of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Anyone who wears red, white and/or blue to the Zoo on the Fourth receives $2 off admission that day. (Discount limited to one per person and is valid only on July 4, 2009.)
The animal keepers prepare red, white and blue frozen treats for the lions, tigers and bears.  And the rhinos will show off their patriotic-painting abilities, applying red, white and blue paints to their canvasses. Other highlights of Red, White & Zoo include Get Close Animal Encounters, an American Flag Garden and a self-guided “parade” of the Zoo, highlighting all animals red, white and blue. (To name just a few: Red kangaroos, red pandas, white storks, blue poison dart frogs and blue-tongued skinks.) Visit www.clemetzoo.com or call 216.661.6500.
Red, White and Blue Food Festival – July 2 – 4
The one thing we all need to remember about Akron is its unbelievable ability to throw a party. And this year, the town is celebrating Independence Day for three straight days during the Red, White and Blue Food Festival at Lock 3 Live.
The food-focused event features grill masters from Ohio, Texas and Tennessee competing for title of “best ribs.” But the dining doesn’t stop there. Families can gobble up some Fourth of July favorites like roast corn, fresh cut potato chips, steak sandwiches, ice cream, funnel cakes and fresh-squeezed lemonade.
The three-day event features daily entertainment by live bands, amusement rides and all sorts of fun summer activities.  Make sure to stick around on July 4 for the Grand Finale Fireworks.
