Until we, and I include our President, understand that Afghanistan has been the rock on which many Empires have been wrecked, from Alexander the Great to the Soviet Union  with the might of Victorian Britain thrown in for good measure, and until we understand that the "sine qua non" in the whole mess is the participation of India in the peace process, then we are doomed to suffer the same fate as those that came before. Define "success" with limited goals, define "failure" with limited criteria, engage India and GET OUT while you can!

Liane, I was clueless too, but wanted to learn. This article seemed pretty informative http://www.cfr.org/publication/17474/indiaafghanistan_relations.html  It made sense to me...Pakistan and India are enemies, India and Afghanistan are friends...so Pakistan sees having the Taliban around as their best defense against India's influence in the region.  Am I close?
Reminds me of the Israeli situation...*we* want them to sit down and make a peace plan, but the tribal loyalty runs deep and the hatred has been stewing for centuries. I'll go out on a limb and assume that oil is involved somehow too.

Thanks Jo for your link. In the meantime I..ve found more or less the same link only via a German search machine. WE seem to be "twins" in finding things we don..t know!LOL
I think you are probably right with your opinion and not only oil but also there is talk of a big gas pipeline from India through Afghanistan to the western countries. Also India has "learned " about Colonialism from the Brits and will know how to  first exploit the country and then leave them to their own! I personally think Pakistan is the danger . If they would let foreign troops in to help them fight  the Taliban, they may be not extinguished but powerless. But Pakistan probably doesn..t want to get rid of the Taliban as they fear India , and India is one of the upcoming states, not only economically but politically.

Good for you two! This is the kind of inspired digging and research and enquiry that just might save us all. If everyone used the resources available to us these days to get informed, we would be so much better off. And, yes...I think that's exactly what's going on in Afghanistan and that's why i think the involvement of India in any peace plan is essential.

As the editorial  cartoon on the op ed page of our local newspaper-- shows a map of
Afghanistan labeled " I'VE GOTTASCRAM"  and shows President Obama saying "--I've reassessed  my Afghan policy...I guess you're ahead of the curve again , Charlie--Too bad you don't have a direct line to the White House!!!  My opinion--we've probably done all we can there--let's get our people out --

..I would like us to leave Afganistan too! The entire middle east, if possilbe!  After reading this blog, i was checking out some info.  Check out,  reuters.com!  It says that; some analysts see a risk of a new proxy war erupting in Afgan if we withdraw.  Indian influence will exacerbate regional tension and encourage Pakistani couter-measures. Does seem like a rough situation that we have gotten into!  The military probably should try and focus on some limited strides!  Hoping there will be a chance for us to leave!..

..Wanted to add some more info from this website!  Reuters breaking news says, that the U.S. comittment to the war will be crucial in the attitude of the Pakistan army.  If they know that we have  a withdrawl date, they will be reluctant to help.  I know this is hard for us to take and the idea of sending more troops is heartbreaking! Guess that our leaders could be between Iraq and a hard place! (maybe bad time for a joke)   ..

I'm still not sure what the interest is there other than to flush out the Al-Qaeda and keep them from having a place in a strategic area to build enlistment for their hate war...maybe the trade route?

I talked to a cab driver from Afghanistan last year and he told me that he had to come here because it was so difficult to live in peace there...he stressed that the people really want to just live in peace.

I would like to hear more of what the people have to say from these countries...

Footnote:  Interesting that Alexander the Great died in Babylon.

.. ....Hello Brenda, and everyone else,

I'm thinking along the same lines as you. We, the US went to Afghanistan to flush out osama.. That hasn't happened yet. Dead or Live, was the mission. If we leave, then we've failed, because if you believe that osama did 911, then he's still on the loose. I think that's pretty cut and dry. We are not there to free the people there, or change their type of government, we are there to get osama. If we leave without completing our mission, then why did we go? Also all those men and women would have lost their lives for nothing.
Like Vietnam, we went without a clear picture of what we were going there for, or how to get the job done.
Bush promised that Iraq would not be another Vietnam, and in the same vain, Afghanistan too. And in many ways, it has become another war we're going to leave undone.

Not because we cant do the job, but because there  is corruption and stupidity at every level of our government.
I would not want my son to go and die, or lose a limb, because they cant get it right.
I worked to hard to have him, and raise him, to hand him over without expecting 100% responsibility on the governments part.
That's how I'm feeling anyway..
..

..Hi Lee,

I don't like war either - I believe that there is more than 'we the people' know about Afghanistan.........Srgt. York was a consciensous objector before he ended up serving in World War I.  It is said that he "just wanted to stop those guns".........With Osama and his followers it is more than guns, it their mission to wipe out non believers.  The group, however small or large is bullying people of their own countries to follow them or face mutilation or death.........Remember the commercial recently with the little kid in the playground being harrassed by a bully?  His friends surrounded him and the bully backed away - no fighting - just presence.

For whatever mutipulative reasons some in government positions all over the world have that are participating in these conflicts - my comfort is in knowing that we are surrounding bullies who are not going to stop at their borders but will and have crossed over ours and others.

The opinion of Americans are heard around the world - we can object to war - but if we don't also support our troops and those that are making a presence - we are a country divided against itself to them - we've made mistakes in past wars - but the heart of our people needs to show up stronger than our differences.  Not only to the bullies, but to the manipulators.

..........

There have been so many deaths in Afghanistan both US and other Countries. Perhaps we should not send over the extra 21,000 troops, but it seems our Military Commanders want the troops. Therefore, it might look we will be involved in the long run. I worry about the fact that we can't get into Pakistan without their permission, and that is where the Taliban is gathering to fight and to train. It's a very frightful thought. I don't want to see anymore troops killed. I just can't take it anymore. However, how can we ever ensure the safety of our country. Look what just happened last weeks with the terrorists already in our Country ready to plant bombs. Luckily, there were undercover people these terrorists encountered. Will we be successful if we stay in Afghanistan? With what you said, Charlie, is history really repeating itself?  :(  For the sake of our beloved soldiers, I pray that success is bringing everyone home.

..Probably a bit out of the loop regarding US policy at the moment.
....But I seem to recall in the early days of the Afghan conflict - someone mentioned some lucrative deposits of oil/gas  in the north and the control of the future pipeline was a part of the equation.

Not sure if that's accurate information. ..

..The part about the Russians in Afghanistan reminded me of that song from 1989.  Billy Joel's, "We didn't start the fire!"  Stuck in my head now for the day, thanks Charlie!lol  But, the song is as true today, we didn't start this fire.  Terrorism did!  Turmoil in the middle east is not anything new.  My man was in; "Operation Desert Storm"! Which is not much in comparison to todays fighting!  My dad and uncle went to Vietnam.  My great uncles to Korea and WWII!  Seems that war is an unfortunate part of "everyone's" history!  And is going to "burn on and on" when we are gone.  Unless all us humans can imbrace peace.  For some unknown reason it seems in our makeup to fight or turn to violence when we are angry.  Maybe we have been to busy learning by the example of the history instead of from its mistakes! ..

Roxana, please give your 'man' a big hug from me and thank him for his service. I'm not even sure that "terrorism" started it all(but then, I have a pretty strong "Biblical world view"). I know it sounded good when Bush said that 9/11 was an attack on "our freedom"(as if they hate us because we are free?)...no they hate us because we stand behind Israel. The radical Muslims have a "mandate" to convert the whole world for Allah, and if it means extinguishing those who don't believe, so be it. Christians are commanded to tell the Gospel of Christ, but we don't kill you if you say no(that whole pesky free-will business). Ariana can explain it much better than I can, so I hope she joins in...but they truly feel that they are on a mission from Allah to rid the world of infidels. When you add our support of Israel(whom they hate so much, they are willing to strap bombs on their own children and put a bull's eye on innocent civilians), it's an accident waiting to happen.
In other 'wars', we were fighting the enemy 'where they lived', now we are fighting a terrorist organization that is spread all over the world, in small cells. Pretty clever of them, if you think about it....like a twisted game of hide and seek. They are targeting countries who pride themselves on 'openness' and 'free-thinking' to build their network. Another issue that makes this difficult, is that we've always fought enemies who didn't want to die. Eventually, one side would become weak and want to end the suffering, and be willing to make concessions to end the war and save their own butts. Not this enemy...they stand right in front of us, taunting and smug, wishing that we would kill them so they can be a martyr and go to Heaven. It takes the big "trump card" off the table. We work to limit civilian casualties...they set up headquarters inside private homes, schools and hospitals(then they can blame 'us' for killing their children and garner sympathy). We are trying to win them over with food, support, etc...and they find their neighbor's head on a stick in the morning...who do you think has the power over the people? All because 2 brothers hated each other thousands of years ago, and now the world wants the oil found in that same region and has become involved in a vicious family feud.

Hey there ZMT - here is a website that might interest you.

..www.jihadtojesus.com..  - I met this guy - he's the real deal.  I've met several former muslim militants that have become Christians - and of course they have the best insight on the mindset of terrorists.

Talk about change - these people are making an inpact on their own people in a major way - and at the risk of their lives.  They are present day Pauls and are now adamant about love and peace.

I now understand what it might have been like for some Christians of the 1st century to say they knew Paul - and other Christians say - you met the persecutor that "breathed out threats" to us Christians?

Yes...some people change.

Hello Brenda, I have followed the link you intended for ZMT and it is very interesting!I..m not a religious person but themes like this have always interested me. I..d love to get the book .This interests me particularly, as at the time of the Lebanon Civil War I was working in a refugee hostel where many Lebanese found refuge. I may add Christians and Muslims and they all lived peacefully together even having to share kitchens and sanitary facillities, so it would be interesting to hear somene who was involved in this conflict.
Thanks for posting the link.

Have you all read Ariana's reply on the "Darwin" blog? It's very religious(so be forewarned) but an amazing story of her life as a Muslim in Iran, and coming to the US and converting to Evangelical Christianity. I have friends who are Orthodox Jews, who escaped from Iran in the same era, when the Ayatollah came to power. Their sister is a reporter for 60 Minutes, and wrote a book about their family's experience. http://www.amazon.com/Journey-Land-No-Girlhood-Revolutionary/dp/1400046114

I have now informed myself on this subject, and I agree with you, and India would eventually fail so I think the thing is to get out now.Things have escalated so much that even more troops won..t help.

Afghanistan has always been a difficult country as we have seen in the past. So even here I see India there for a short time , or again is it money or natural resources. that are more interesting. Can you imagine  Hindus  and Muslims living together in peace? No way!!

..You make alot of vaild points there, ZMT!  I guess this in not like any other war.   Never seen people that were so explosion happy!  Don't they use guns? I always wondered why they seem to hate us!  Never thought of it that way, us standing with Israel. I guess they just want everyone to fear them!  Seems even their own people.  Just was thinking if help is on the way, why  leave!  But, maybe this is an unwinable war!   has been dragging on for years!  But,  what will happen afterwards  if we just leave?  Won't they just run rampet?  Guess they already are anyway!  Do you think this has alot to do with the oil?  Hate to think that people are dying to save money on gas!  Anyway,  thanks for the feedback!  Not well informed on alot of things , I guess.   You guys seem very knowlegeable.  I want to try and understand what is going on in and with the U.S.!!  Thanks for the comment about my fiance!  I'll tell him, sure that it will make him proud.  He has a combat medal for being in Kuwait as infantry,  while they were bombing stuff! They were mostly hanging around awaiting orders.  He was a Bradley tank driver!  Says that it was fun to drive. He did step next to  a land mine, though.  Scared him. ..

Oh Roxana...thank you for the compliment, but it's only my opinion of the situation. I have a very strong "Biblical world view" and see this Middle East situation as beginning in and predicted in the Bible. There is soooo much more to this crisis than that, that has developed over the centuries, including our dependence on their oil. These fanatics do hate us for more than just our support of Israel..they also see our "lifestyle" as immoral and decadent and offensive to Allah...yet other nations call us "puritanical", go figure. I think it's a combination of a bunch of things, but I'd suspect that Israel is a big part of it. It's just the part I understand most clearly, so my answers sound like I know more than I really do ;-)

..A solution exists,to withdraw NATO troops, and leave the command to Mullah Omar (The Taliban leader in Afghanistan). .. ..This man fought against the Russians, as against other Afghans warlords whom put the country in an absolute chaos after the end of that war. He did a good job…a can say... ..I limit myself to copy   what a USA diplomat said .." The taliban will probably go in the same direction of the Saudi Arabia. There will be Aramco, oil pipelines, a emir, no parliament and a bunch of  Sharia lows. We can live with all this"........ ..Sounds cynic but honestly I think this will happen in the end. ..Charlie since I am a political amateur on this issue, while you are a very well informed gentleman/citizen, I am now trying to find some viable information on the relations between India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the United States. I have found a website that is quite informative, it is called DemocracyNow.org. Interesting recent development has occured between the U.S. and India: Hillary Clinton signed a Nuclear Arms deal with India. U.S. companies want the Indian Parliament to pass legislation limiting liability in case of nuclear accidents or disasters. I believe this deal to be a strategic action on our part, which will only escalate the Indiani-Pakistani relations. I believe our role in this matter will only create a more terroristic incentive to avoid peaceful negotiations. I will try to search for more infomation on this issue. I can only thank you for bringing your political but peaceful words out into the forefront. I enjoy reading your blogs, and look forward to discussing them with my brother! Sincerely,

yes, those of us who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it? three times in one century though, this is ridiculous. is our goal in afghanistan now really having to do with protecting it's people from the taliban?  they like the taliban! they are intermarried with the taliban!  this wasn't what 9-11 was about, the social shaping of a country? especially not when we teach them to hate us more than respect us.  sadam hussein is gone, war won, osama bin laden is no where to be seen or dead, do we fight on until we find his grave, under which rock in which cave in which mountain? have we disbanded much of the organized alqaeda, kept them distracted, brought them out of the cracks so we could know who they were? mission accomplished.  it's time to come home now victoriously, all that needs to be done is to define victory in a common sense fashion and we will know it has been achieved already. bonnie worthington usa (i love my coungtry and it's people, but some of these politicians need spanked, and some of the defeated/deposed ones need incarcerated)  my hope's in god and obama!
