Sup yall! I am Old School C. I am trying to find information on a guy named Cooley Jackson. The reason I am looking high and low and scraping the internet for this info is because Ive been in a dispute with a few people over who it was that actually taught Michael Jackson the "Moonwalk" or Backslide as some call it. Ive even went as far as to contact Boogaloo Sam of the Electric Boogaloos to get some knowledge on the Moonwalk and also all the funkstyles. Boogaloo Sam told me that they started the Backslide in 1976 in Fresno and took it to Long Beach in 78. Sam also credits Tickin Will as the creator of all slide moves. What I have found is that there are too many people takin credit for teaching Michael this move. Boogaloo Sam also stressed to me that the Moonwalk and the Backslide are two totally different dances. I saw an interview where Jeffrey Daniel took credit for teachin Michael the Moonwalk. Wikipedia.com states that this guy Cooley Jackson is not only the creator of the Moonwalk, but he taught Michael the Moonwalk. Very few people know that the Moonwalk/Backslide predates poping and locking.I recently saw footage from 1955 of Bill Bailey performing this Moonwalk or Backslide. Cab Calloway in 1932 did certain movements that resembled this move and other slide moves that Boogaloo Sam credits Tickin Will for creating. What is your take on this issue? Somebody Holla Back! Oh! before I forget, I also read that Michael Jackson came up with the name Moonwalk which would contradict Boogaloo Sams point about the EBs comming up with a dance called the Moonwalk in the 70s. Hell who's right? I really dont know anymore. All this would have been clear in the begining if Michael would have given due credit to these people instead of saying he learned it from kids in the ghetto.

what up man? i agree wit the last sentence man. it would have cleared things up a little better. as far as the actual creator of the moonwalk, truly known as the backslide, it's up in the air. unfortunatly, it dates back so far that no one really knows for sure who created it. jeff daniel taught michael jackson the backslide and credited his own dance to the eb's. bill bailey was an original tap dancer from the days. and if the backslide pre-dates to those times, then i don't believe that anyone will ever be given credit to the move. since it was before real african-american dance recorded times in the u.s. but i do believe that boogaloo sam gave credit to the man that sparked the interest to that move, tickin will. but of course it's only speculations, and we can only trust what people say considering the circumstances. so you either believe sam, or you don't. since there really isn't many other dance og's who would truly know besides him, i'd believe him. the moonwalk is a different glide style. it looks like you're actually walking on the moon, going around in a circle using the heel-toe techniques. you see mj doing this move alot as well. the reason why he called the backslide the moonwalk, is simply because it was just easier to commercialize the name, "moonwalk" instead of "backslide". but that's what i believe. hit me up wit any comments. peace.
