Category: Music
Been seeing lots of questions about our show online in the post Save New Wave blogopshere buzz.

Let me address the naysayers unequivocally:
We're a DEPECHE MODE tribute band. Depeche Mode plays with backing tracks (tape reel in the early days). Therefore, WE play with backing tracks. You don't see a drummer onstage do you? Those sounds come from somewhere (more on that in a minute). I assure you we play as much live (if not more) than they did in the classic lineup configuration. At the Save New Wave Festival, "In The Fletch" clapped his hands a lot, and if you've ever seen the D.A.Pennebaker film "DM 101" you'd appreciate the purposeful tongue in cheek joke...

We work HARD to painstakingly recreate the music we hold so dear.
The real work in bringing you these songs is in preparing said backing tracks, which oftentimes take 100+ hours of preparation per song, BEFORE we even begin the live rehearsal aspect of what we do. That also involves about a dozen synthesizers & samplers (some vintage eBay specials just like DM used) and a heap of other studio equipment I've amassed over the years. Rest assured, only 15% of the equipment involved in making this music is seen onstage. I'll be doing a tech interview with a gear oriented magazine soon for a more in depth discussion about this. In the meantime, please know that we aren't just miming puppets up there. Andy has been in a major label band, and both David and myself have indie record deals as artists ourselves. Andy and myself both have music degrees from college and, I daresay, know a little bit about music beyond how to press play on a tape deck. That's Ashlee Simpson's job!

Mode on!
Cheers,
Counterfeit Martin

I'm sure you were just as awesome on Saturday.
Haters will be haters, but Mode is forever!

I have heard the flat backing tracks, there's so much more when you guys hit the synths/guitars/big metal objects. Don't let the haters slow you down for a moment.

Brent,

As a fellow "track user" I would like to say that the reality of hauling all matter of expensive analog gear from show to show (like from Seattle to LA) is that's expensive and not worth the time to satisfy a group of purist "haters". It has been Love Vigilantes experience that the crowd overwhelmingly appreciates it when the music sounds as great as it can whether you employ the use of tracks or not. Most folks just don't care. At the end of the day, we are entertainers and it's our responsiblity to make the masses happy.
Keep on keeping on!

Brian

I knew you guys had to do so many hours to prep for each song, and that only makes me appreciate what you do more! You guys are amazing! I cannot tell you how much respect I have for you: taking all the time to do what you do, you show true devotion. You guys are GREAT.

Brent remember that one time you had acid reflux on SNL and got caught lip synking ? That was really funny.

I am a hater for sure, but only cause you schedule shows when I am out of town or working. Not cool.

I'm a mess, but i support the three of you .........and I "get" the clapping.

I'm pretty shocked that someone could have seen your show on the 21st and thought you were anything less than 100% devoted to authentically replicating the music. You were all fantastic. I thought getting up there and taking on "Question of Lust" was brave...and you were impeccable. Faux Dave was perfection as well.

I am ALWAYS blown away by how amazing your performance is. I forget that I'm not watching the real Depeche Mode and I totally lose myself in the moment. :) Thats why I HAD to be in the pit for this show. And down in the pit, everyone else was blown away!! You made alot of new fans that night, and I heard nothing but shock and adoration.
:) I had the 101 VHS, and the double cassettes (whoa, i feel old) and so Saturday's show was a truly exciting, panty moistening experience for me!! :)

I know a few people, personally, that do nothing but sit around and post negative stuff on the net. Its all they do. Its their hobby. They get high off stirring up shit.. because they have no life of their own, or because they are jealous. There is more negative stuff on the net, because its a safe place to talk shit. Its best to ignore it, and remember that there are tons of fans who are too busy enjoying their life, to spend time writing blogs and reviews. For every asshole, there are way more good people who love your band.
:)xo

You guys are fuckin' awesome! If only the fuckin' haters knew what it takes to manipulate Voltage Controlled Oscillators, Voltage Controlled Filters, and other synthesizer modules in order to recreate the sounds of the Mode. If there was a mother fucker available to do what the Mode did in recordings, it would be 24 dudes on stage, so of course some of the shit comes from sequencers (simulating what the Mode did when they'd play the rest of the sounds on tape machines).

I understand the painstaking process that you guys go through in order to recreate the sounds of the Mode, and I truly appreciate it. When I saw you guys at Rock-it last year, I almost thought that I was at a DM concert b/c of how precise your interpretations of the music is.

Keep on kickin' ass and FUCK THE HATERS!! As far as I'm concerned, its usually talent-less fucks that like to hate on people w/ talent.
Let them try to understand the concepts of trying to manipulating synth modules in order to get the same exact sounds, and you'll notice that they are completely lost!

Your boy and Fan

Guys:

In a world where any idiot can get Garage Band and create a song, I think real talent get diminished. You are all clearly talented MUSICIANS who bring to life the experience of see DM in an intimate setting. As a tribute musician who has played with you guys, I can attest to the quality of what you do and the integrity that comes with it. There will always be haters.
Be it failed musicians who think being in a tribute is below them, (I guess playing originals to 10 of the friends at a bar is more fun that a gig at The Gibson) of just losers with some other hidden agenda, you get the same if you were in a original band that was doing well!

Success breed jealousy in those who want what you have but are not good enough to get it themselves.
Keep up the good work and let your reputation and success do the talking!

you guys are so nice and patient to even address the haters. keep up what you're doing. in some ways i would argue this is more of a pure depeche mode experience than going to an actual depeche mode concert where they don't play all the fan favorite hits, all the posers in la have all the good seats, and there is no space to wig out and get down with the dm hits like we do in our own homes.

Well said! We had an in-depth discussion (some a little more drunk than others) after the show at the HOB in S.D. and we couldn't come to an agreement about this very topic. Although, I did not know "the truth" I did not care. My comment was "who cares!!!" It was the best form entertainment from no less than a band that we all adore!! EVERYONE was having a great time and you rocked the house.

I loved it! Your hard work should not have to be justified but I'm glad that you shared your intense labor (of love)

Thank you for posting this...
