Been seeing lots of questions about our show online in the post Save New Wave blogopshere buzz.
Let me address the naysayers unequivocally:
We're a DEPECHE MODE tribute band. Depeche Mode plays with backing tracks (tape reel in the early days). Therefore, WE play with backing tracks. You don't see a drummer onstage do you? Those sounds come from somewhere (more on that in a minute). I assure you we play as much live (if not more) than they did in the classic lineup configuration. At the Save New Wave Festival, "In The Fletch" clapped his hands a lot, and if you've ever seen the D.A.Pennebaker film "DM 101" you'd appreciate the purposeful tongue in cheek joke...
We work HARD to painstakingly recreate the music we hold so dear.
The real work in bringing you these songs is in preparing said backing tracks, which oftentimes take 100+ hours of preparation per song, BEFORE we even begin the live rehearsal aspect of what we do. That also involves about a dozen synthesizers & samplers (some vintage eBay specials just like DM used) and a heap of other studio equipment I've amassed over the years. Rest assured, only 15% of the equipment involved in making this music is seen onstage. I'll be doing a tech interview with a gear oriented magazine soon for a more in depth discussion about this. In the meantime, please know that we aren't just miming puppets up there. Andy has been in a major label band, and both David and myself have indie record deals as artists ourselves. Andy and myself both have music degrees from college and, I daresay, know a little bit about music beyond how to press play
on a tape deck. That's Ashlee Simpson's job!
Mode on!
Cheers,
