The precession of the equinoxes through the astrological constellations of the Zodiac is an astronomical phenomenon.  The same phenomenon of axial wobble is responsible for Milankovitch cycles which affect the Earth's climate.  This may be how the Mayan calendar has been so prescient in regards to predicting doomsdays at the turnings of Baktuns.  Climate fluctuations naturally occur at those periods.  In my recent blog, I've overlaid the Mayan Baktun cycles over Western history, and the correlation to major civilization events (on the other side of the world from the Mayans!) is astonishing.  It even predicts the Biblical flood!
