"It cannot be because of the health impact, because that is exactly the other way around. There has never been a fatality from marijuana use among the 60 million reported users in the United States, whereas tobacco kills hundreds of thousands of people every year. My strong suspicion, though I do not know how to prove it, is that the reason is that marijuana is a weed, you can grow it in your backyard, so there is nobody who would make any money off it if it were legal. Tobacco requires extensive capital inputs and technology, and it can be monopolized, so there are people who can make a ton of money off it. I do not really see any other difference between the two of them, frankly except that tobacco is far more lethal and addictive."

as Bob wrote: "get up, stand up."

as I wrote: "we've got to trust the wisdom in ourselves."

the war on drugs is a sham that only serves to fill the pockets of the ultra-wealthy.  since this "war," many have had their lives ruined and the "problem" is worse than ever!  what's new, right?  same thing with the "war" in Iraq and Vietnam before that.

Not only that one of the main reasons why marijuana isnt legalized is because of the fact that too many companies would loose out on money. Because marijuana is not only good for smoking but its good for other shit IE..paper.gas.and so on.

I do agree with one of the readers up farther, about legalizing it an incurring the taxes. Here in NY I save 50% when I buy my ciggs from the Indian Reservation. The same thing would happen to our precious herbs too. Legalizing marijuana in the U.S. is far from happening. What we should all be concerned with is decriminalizing it. As long as I get to smoke it's all good.

Its amazing to think that Miss Mary Jane was the largest cash crop in the U.S. this year.  It was also the #1 cash crop in my home state, and its not legal.  If the screwed up politicans would legalize Miss Mary enough money could be made to get our country out of debt from the war.  But yet you can go in a bar get trashed and get in the car.  Tobacco and Alcohol--Population Control,  Miss Mary never hurt anybody.

PEACE

(2000): "Illicit drug use is associated with suicide, homicide, motor-vehicle injury, HIV infection, pneumonia, violence, mental illness, and hepatitis. An estimated 3 million individuals in the United States have serious drug problems. Several studies have reported an undercount of the number of deaths attributed to drugs by vital statistics; however, improved medical treatments have reduced mortality from many diseases associated with illicit drug use. In keeping with the report by McGinnis and Foege, we included deaths caused indirectly by illicit drug use in this category. We used attributable fractions to compute the number of deaths due to illicit drug use. Overall, we estimate that illicit drug use resulted in approximately 17000 deaths in 2000, a reduction of 3000 deaths from the 1990 report."

Money is a non-issue with the illegality of marijuana. It's all politics. This is a quote from the Shafer Commission that was initiated by congress in '72. Had President Nixon not had a personal vendetta against drugs in America, this would have probably led to national legislation legalizing the possession of cannabis.

“ ... Therefore, the Commission recommends ... [that the] possession of marijuana for personal use no longer be an offense, [and that the] casual distribution of small amounts of marihuana for no remuneration, or insignificant remuneration, no longer be an offense.”
- Shafer Commission, 1972

honestly I believe the only reasoning behind it not being legal is the fact that the government cannot find a way to tax it...everyone is capable of growing there own and therefore no one is making any money..especially the government...and the government really likes control..as we can tell
