What does the word "holiness" make you think of, as it relates to people? Some may say legalism or superiority. However, I find true holiness to be very positive and exciting; it is the key to receiving the greatest promise of God—the ability to behold Him!

For this very reason we are strongly exhorted to pursue holiness.
"…as the One who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all your conduct and manner of living. For it is written, you shall be holy, for I am holy"  (1 Pet. 1:15-16, AMP)

God never gives an impossible command to fulfill, so why do we often miss the mark?

God’s holiness is transcendent which means, "to climb across or above." He is above all and beyond all. So in essence, when God says, "Be holy as I am holy," He is saying, "I don’t live as you do. My thoughts are above your thoughts, and My ways are above your ways…come up to My level of living!"
With this core understanding of holiness, we can more easily identify with this instruction given to believers: "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Rom. 12:2, NIV).

We must ascend to a higher level of living
...t
he more we set ourselves apart for Him in true holiness, the clearer we see Him and the more we become like Him. And the process continues until we see Him face to face.

In beholding Jesus, we will say like those who met Him on the road to Emmaus, "Then their eyes were opened…and they said to one another, ’Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?’" (Luke 24:31-32). Holiness will cause your heart to burn with holy fire, a fire fueled by a hunger for God’s Word, spreading to all those you come in contact with!

Wow holiness was the last episode of growth God had me go through, not that I got it and it is over but God had me educated on it so that I could reach for that goal in my life.

I would deeply recommend this book: Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges.

It is so thorough in the scriptures about what holiness is, the problems we have with achieving it, and how to overcome and be holy as God asks us to. The book is powerful and can change lives.

Also that is a cool passage about Jesus encountering those people on the way.

The word that is translated as "open" as in "he opened the scriptures to us" is dianoigō which can mean - the first opening of the womb (first born), opening of ears/eyes, or to cause something to be understood.

I am going to assume they did not have a bound book of the torah therefore they did not open a book as we think of opening a book, Jesus made the old testament known to them all the prophecies and religious sacraments now made sense!

By breaking bread and giving it to them everything added up and they knew!
.. bout to go write a blog of my own now!

Thanks for posting.

Amen Brother John,
Holiness should not be a legalistic wardrobe we put on just to meet God, but it should be our vary nature that we strive to live like God, we should have a strong desire to take on the vary nature of our Heavenly Father. Just as we take on some of the charictoristics of our earthly parents, we should also take on the same to an even greater measure of of God......Holiness should not be taken lightly, but taken totally.

I needed to hear this today. It's simple truth. So, why do we never go back to the truth in it's simplicity? We complicate things so much in life...but He is calling us to be Holy. Thanks so much for speaking, teaching, writing, and being obedient.

Thank you Pastor John for this word in season. The Lord has been speaking to me recently about this from John 15. He said, "Now you are clean through the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the Vine, no more can you, except you abide in Me." I can bear fruits of righteousness because and only if I abide in Him who IS righteous and holy. It's less about my doing and more about my being - - being connected to / abiding in Him. His nature transforms my nature as i abide in and stay yeilded to Him, producing the fruit in my life.

Thank you for the exhortation and confirmation sir. I look forward to your next post.

God bless.

Wow....this is powerful. I am discovering the process of holiness how you referred to the fire is painful process somedays. I know that if I want to be like Christ I have to endure not the physical cross but I am experiencing my own personal death to flesh everyday. Thank you.
