Zombie Ghost Train; Corpse Show Creeps; Hot Rod Hearse
Our pick for 2007's Best Bowling Alley isn't just a great place to put ball to pin or throw back some brews—it's also become home to a growing number of quality rock shows. And tonight's event is an overdose of pomade and upright bass, with three leading psychobilly groups taking the stage. The genre hovers on the brink of total obscurity, with its blend of rockabilly, punk rock, and horror-film aesthetic (think Jerry Lee Lewis meets Dead Kennedys meets Creature From the Black Lagoon). But each band is a draw in its own right. Zombie Ghost Train, a trio from Down Under, rocks the stage in full undead makeup and improbable pompadours, sporting a polished, laid-back sound and swaggering style. Local scene leaders Hot Rod Hearse feature a similarly traditional sound, but with a bent toward muscle cars and growling vocals, while Corpse Show Creeps' manic energy and frantic guitars swing closer to old-school punk rock face-melting. 21+. 9:00 p.m. —Ward Rubrecht
