Thanks for your Suggestions and Comments!!! We are overwhelmed and because you've been so good you get 1 unreleased track this week…

Big Monkey Girl

Written by Paul.

It's about a flaming love for another worldly creature

Produced by our Ice Cream Producer and now good friend Donald Ross Skinner (Kiosk)

This is the first of a long line of demos we did from around the time we left Island records in 1997 to when we split in Oct 98. This is one of three tracks we officially demoed for Island in a studio in Wandsworth. It was a really ropy time as we where sort of trying to court our own label to make sure they would take up the next option on our deal. I have memories of blubbing through listening to different vocal takes cos we'd just been told that it had been to no avail and we'd been dropped. Strange to think back to now but at the time it was as if our whole world had collapsed around us, but we were still recording these three songs, Island at least allowed us to finish them, very strange.  However we are very happy with the recordings, we'll put the others up in due course.

Sleepwalking

Written by Marijne.

Inspired by a friend's antics in his sleep

This was recorded specifically as a B side at a studio in Holborn near the British Museum and the very first Pizza Express!!.

Julius

Written by Paul and Marijne

I accidentally uploaded to MySpace the demo of this B side, so I thought I'd leave it up as a novelty. This was recorded c.1992 before the Kent EP on stage at the Orange in West Kensington in the afternoon before a gig, as a proper demo recording session. In that session we also recorded Demos for Motorbike to Heaven, A Man with a Box, Heaven can Wait, Planet in the Ocean and A Hole in the Sky (not a song that will ever see the light of day…but was played a lot when we gigged as The Merry Babes) Julius was a rare Paul and Marijne co-write and was first played live when we became Salad at a gig at the Milk Bar opposite the Astoria. We announced that from now on we were Salad and someone shouted back at us,' that's a Shit Name!' so we kept it.

Diary Hell

Written by Salad

Produced by Drink me Producer Mark Freegard

It was going to go onto Drink Me; Mark Freegard thought we were nuts that we didn't put it on, as with Julius the Bside. We'd got him on board because of his work with the Breeders (Last Splash) and Madder Rose (Panic On). It's about going through your lover's diary and finding out all sorts of stuff you shouldn't have found out, serves you right!!! The track came about from a Jam at our rehearsal room in the basement of a house on the Finchley Road.. The mad bit in the middle is an example of musique concrete ala Pink Floyd and represents a mind in turmoil that comes back into focus to sort out the problem. It appears to be a favourite of quite a few of you. Check out the previously unreleased lyrics

Until the next installment.

...and I thought I'd heard everything Salad had ever done!

Big Monkey Girl is a great tune - it's interesting to hear the direction Salad were taking when Island Records did the unthinkable and dropped the band.

It's odd to hear alternative versions of songs you know inside out - the Julius demo is a fascinating snapshot of the song in progress.

I recently managed to get hold of a Merry Babes demo on tape (with hand a written track list). It really shows how the band's sound started out. Can't wait to hear more of these rarities. I'm particularly keen to find out more about a song which occasionally popped up in the live set (in 1996/7 I think) but never made it to CD. Sadly I can't remember the name...

A thousand thank-yous to Marijne for letting these gems see the light of day.
