That well known cliché “two’s company, three’s a crowd” does not apply
to music. On the contrary, three is often the perfect number for a
group, as two members take turns to hang back in support of the one who
steps out in front to take the lead for a moment.
The Amestoy Trio were based in Toulon when they recorded their
only album Le Fil six years ago, featuring an unusual line-up of
Jean-Luc Amestoy accordion; Gilles Carles guitar and Nicolas Clavet
tuba. Do they still exist? I don’t know.
Amestoy Trio
Most trios feature different instruments, but the three
Palestinian brothers in Le Trio Joubran all play oud, and make room for
each other in a deliciously thoughtful manner. A new album is on the
way, but it is hard to imagine that it can improve on the one before,
Majâz.
Le Trio Joubran
Back in the 1920s and 1930s, trios were a common format in Cuba,
where Le Trio Matamoros was the vehicle for guitar-playing songwriter
Miguel Matamoros from Santiago de Cuba (8 May 1894 – 15 April 1971).
The group was later a launching pad for songwriter Guilllermo
Portobales and vocalist Beny More.
Trio Matamoros
British musicians Ben Mandelson, Lu Edmonds and Justin Adams are
all members of more than one current trio, the first two having
recently recorded as part of Blue Blokes 3, and Justin with Juldeh
Camara and Dawson Miller. Les Triaboliques recorded a marvellously
entertaining live session for World on 3 last year, but have chosen a
more conservative approach for their studio album which reaches its
pinnacle on ‘Gulaguajira’, a Cuban-styled track reminiscent of the two
albums by American guitarist Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizos.
Les Triaboliques
The album by the Turkish combo The Taksim Trio slipped through the
cracks after its release a couple of years ago, but continues to give
pleasure. Clarinettist Hüsnü Senlendirici is the most famous of the
three musicians, and found perfect companions in Ismail Tunçbilek
(baglama) and Aytaç Dogan (qanun).
Taksim Trio
Once the possibility of including a jazz trio is considered, the
choice is almost infinite, but it’s not hard to settle on the
remarkable Thelonious Monk Trio featuring Percy Heath on bass and Art
Blakey on drums, playing one of the most famous of all jazz tunes,
Monk’s own composition’ Blue Monk’. Sublime.
