It's been so long since I've posted that I feel like a MySpace failure. I hope you will forgive me. I'm currently in an undersized and overfurnished rooom in an oversized yet overcrowded hotel in Helsinki. As it is a bit too cold to venture out, I am determined to begin the process of catching up on blogs I meant to post ages ago. Welcome to the first installment.
Between August and January, I've had the pleasure of working with two members of the distinguished Wainwright family. Today, I will tell you about one of those experiences. Sometime in August, Maxim Moston, Thomas Bartlett, CJ Camerieri, Brad Albetta and I spent the day at Electric Lady Studios in the West Village. The occaion was to track two Brian Wilson songs from "Smile" for Rufus Wainwright to sing over. The little number was to eventually find a home on the next Warchild Benefit CD. Tracking was incredibly fun. I laid down nylon guitar, overdubbed a steel string part while Thomas played keyboard, contributed a couple more guitar tracks with Brad laying it down, listened to CJ overdub brass and finished up by adding violin alongside Mr. Moston (aka producer of the day). Or so I thought. All this concluded at about 2 or 3pm, having begun bright and early, and CJ and I set out to pick up some wine for the musicians. A film crew had arrived and was awaiting the endlessly delayed arrival of Mr. Wainwright. By the time he showed up, we had been through a bottle or two, and seeing that our resistance was low, Rufus whisked us away into the live room to spontaneously form a male chorus. Not a pretty sound at first, but we got it together and sang all the incredibly complex backing parts in a semi circle around a single microphone. It was an absolutely unforgettable day and I look forward to receiving a proper copy (which has so far proved elusive...oh charity).
Next time on Moose and the Wainwrights, look forward to tales of recording folk songs with Loudon!
