Chris Cornell has paid tribute to Michael Jackson, who died yesterday.

Chris told NME: "I was on my way from Poland to Berlin following a show. At 1am I got the news and was immediately saddened,” he said. "I remembered being six years old and seeing the Jackson 5 on our black and white TV. His brothers were cool but he had a halo around him.

"Superstar at 12. What promise. He had magic! It was by chance that I recorded and rearranged his song 'Billie Jean' and have been amazed at the response it gets when I perform it every night. He was amazingly talented and largely misunderstood.

"I hope that the media will be kind and celebrate the genius instead of cashing in on the tabloid angles that made him a prisoner. I think he deserves that."

Absolutely!  I saw CC in Dallas in March-what a great show!  When Chris sang "BillyJean", it was so quiet except for him singing, you could have heard a pin drop, because everyone was so into the remix of that song-amazing man paying tribute to one of the most talanted, yet misunderstood people of our generation.  I grew up listening to "the Jackson 5" also, and I am proud to say that I loved Michael Jackson's music, he was a very talented person who wound up being the scapegoat for everything that was a little 'different'.  May God let him RIP and give his family and millions of fans worldwide comfort for his loss.

..i myself couldn't beleive the news of his death!! Ialso remember growing up watching the jackson 5 on my parents black and whitet.v.!! He always shined over the rest of the family!! misunderstood he was. I really don't beleive all of the accusations that were held over him all of these yrs. just exploitation is all that it was..he had fame and fortune..when your on top there is always someone trying to take you down...his heart was that of a child..a child hereally never got to be. my gawd at the age of 5 he was taking care of business!!! peter pan is what he was..wouldn't we all love to be young in our hearts forever and never grow up! he will be missed but he will always be remembered. and chris cornell with you singing billie jean will keep his spirit alive. your just as brilliant!! ..

I really love Chris' rearrangement of "Billie Jean" and keep the video on my page.  I am the same age as Chris, so I remember Michael Jackson in the same way growing up ... just an absolute superstar, for sure.  I bought my son the Jackson Five cd when he was in grammar school and he and his classmates just loved it.  Now my son is 14 years old, and he still can see the talent of MJ.  Last night we tried dancing "Thriller" in memoriam ... we sucked, but we tried ... and we had fun doing it ... which was the whole point, right?  Michael Jackson taught us FUN through his dancing and his music and we won't forget that--ever. :)

You know, one thing that made Soundgarden stand out was that their music was so colorful, and Chris' vocals on "Black Hole Sun" reminded me of Michael.  It didn't "sound like" him, but in the final verse with the, "hang my head, drown my fear..." part reminded me of him.  Chris' version of "Billie Jean" reminds us that music is music, no matter what genre or "movement" or anything else.

When I first heard you made your cover of Billie Jean, I just had to hear it.  I was quite impressed, both that you could perform a pop song in your own rock way, and also because the cover song was from a musical genius. When you perform Billie Jean, it will certainly be bittersweet for some of us.  I agree with you about your media comment.  RIP MJ .. ..

......Michael Jackson, to me, will always be synonymous with music – From his Motown days (and yes Chris, I also remember watching the Jackson 5 on b/w tv Soul Train - and yess he did shine soo ;) thru MTV pop icon to an overall highly talented singer/performer.  I also was immediately saddened - still have this kinda lost feeling today as I type.

......When I was a kid, I had a hot pink record box with all these different 45rpm records – and among them was Michael Jackson’s Rockin Robin.  (Tony Orlando’s Tie a Yellow Ribbon, the Beatles Penny Lane, Delta Dawn by Helen Redding – ok – enough dating myself!!!).  I sold this record box at a yard sale and to this day could kick myself in the ass for doing so!!
........My point is that I grew up alongside the man and his music, and don't regret doing so.

Thank you Chris, for your eloquent words of respect.  They resound equally inside my thoughts.

Fare thee well MJ. ........respectfully,
monique
