Coming later in 2008 will be Korg's new contribution to the MIDI controller market, the Nano range:

I'm sorry but I find these utterly hideous!  They are the least cool musical accessories I've ever seen.  I generally love white pieces of electronic equipment, such as the Virus Polar and the Waldorf Blofeld, and a combination of white & blue sounds so cyber and futuristic that it really should work.  So why is it that these Korg Nano controllers look so un-cool?

Maybe it's because I prefer the gritty realism of Blade Runner to the polished white plastic aesthetic of Star Wars.  Maybe it's just that these controllers look so un-musical and hence uninspiring.  Either way, I'm happy with my Novation SLZero.

hahahaha
normally i really like korg stuff..

to focus on one very important point..
their dance/dj tools normally have loads of flashing lights

with this..
where are the lights?!?!

:P

nteresting concept
can they click together?
are they real keys? or just shitty rubber buttons?
*runs off to google for answers*
they do look pretty shocking tho

Yeah I really like Korg, I have a KP3 and a Microkorg. The KP3 especially is perfect - dark, heavy, metal chasis, bright red glowing pad.. it's inspiring to touch!

These Nanos do look like they click together! Hehe, they look like they click into the front of that macbook even. If i were to describe these in one word though it would be Poxy.

yeh, these things look a little toyish
but i know people who this would benefit
kinda like the modular way its set out, you can kinda create your own control surface based on what you want/need, and always add to it or subtract from it later.
some people dont use drum pads... some would rather heaps of them and no keyboard

also be great travelling if you had a laptop and didn't want to take a big controller
(i have the sl61 instead of the zero... and it cant fit in my backpack )
or someone could collect several and make their own custom crazy workspace at home,
then take 1 or 2 little modules out to a gig or to make music on their lunch break..
if they're cheap enough people will buy em for the novelty/convenience
hope the software/drivers are good.
i'd be interested if i ever got myself a laptop.

so i kinda like the modular approach korg seem to be taking
aesthetically its nothing flash, they could really work on it... and they havn't perfected it yet
but i like the idea of something like the m3 or radias, (if you buy it with a keyboard... stupidly you cant buy the keyboard on its own)
that you can have the keyboard version for situations where its desired
but you can take the module out and chuck it in a case if you were to tour
and hire/borrow some controller keyboard locally...
also its easier to justify taking one more module to a gig, than another full ..board...
there's only so much space in a car/on a stage and time to set it all up..
plus i only have 2 hands

like i'd be cool if i could undo some screws on my sl61, and take out a zero module
or if i could turn my karma into a triton rack..(in full on transformers style of course :P)
it'd be wicked if all manufacturers copied this for other synths that come in a range of sizes.
though some may be scared to, as i think they like overpricing larger models
but i can dream...

(on another note someone should make some controller keyboards with a large frame to sit/bolt modules onto, itd be very practical)

kp3 is win, got one recently but havn't had alot of time to play with it
spent all my money on new equipment (you saw my blog :P)
kinda banned myself from alot of it till after exams as i kept staying up all night
and falling asleep in lectures :P
exams almost all done

only 2 days to go...

but yeh... once i start talking..

Yeah, the size is quite practical. To be honest I can't even fit my SL0 into a backpack, which sucks.
Setting up for a gig is always precious time. If you're playing with other bands there's often 15-minute changeovers and if you're playing from a DJ booth there's never any room to spare.
I just can't help but hate the design choices. Even the shade of blue, and the "light blue to dark blue shading" on the keyboard Nano, is so uninspiring in a musical sense.
The Radias model is brilliant. You can buy it altogether or just the keyboard or the module, and you can unscrew them and take them seperately. And then it looks great as well.

Don't worry, I'm banned from new equipment too! Next thing I want is a multi-output audio interface so I can route seperate outputs to the KP3...but that can wait a year or 2!
