Best of NYC #45: The Jadewalkers, live 05.16 at Lake Johnson
The Jadewalkers play the kind of music that never fails to get inebriated audiences moving—trashy, fast-paced garage-punk with melodic hooks galore. The quartet, originally from Sweden, have irreverent song titles like “Who Killed the Jadewalkers?” and “Happy Feet,” and the band is fronted by Emma Viking Skull. The band’s self-titled album, on PUTA records, contains track after track of angst-ridden ferocity; “Complete Loser” moves at break-neck speed and features a chorus of “oohs” that is immediately infectious, “Jumpstart” features the glam-punk vocal sass of the New York Dolls, and “Nancy” borders on 80s hardcore punk—power chords ripping through pummeling drums—yet features a chorus steeped in (sloppy) pop melody. The Jadewalkers are keeping that old NYC punk sound and spirit alive, and should be embraced by all corners of the city’s indie scene—even if they do hail from overseas. - by Christopher Meyer
