I was first introduced to the type of automobile known as a Maybach from Jay-Z’s song “Brush Your Shoulders Off”. Since then, rappers like Lil Flip, Rick Ross, The Game, Jim Jones and Ice Cube have all rapped about Maybachs frequently in their rhymes. I even walked passed Russell Simmons Maybach on the street in Soho New York once. So how much does one of these exquisite cars cost? Too much for the average rapper, that’s for certain. And with the new influx of digital downloads, most unsigned or newly signed rappers may never own one in their lifetime. So, why do these celebrity rappers in the game make such a fuss about them? Well, it could be there privacy curtains, that are used similarly to the way tinted windows are. The difference of course being the option of being visible, or unseen at your leisure. Or it could be the cockpit type design Maybachs are known to have? Whatever it is, these quarter million dollar vehicles are sought after by rap artist young and old. Yet, I’ve never seen a commercial on Television, or even an ad in a XXL or Source magazine about them. My question is…Do Rappers even deserve Maybachs? I believe they do. I believe that the rap industry should not only recognize rap artists pioneering ability, but also the unbelievable trek Hip-Hop has made from a New York block party trend, to the multi-billion dollar industry it has quickly become. The music industry should stop raping artist ringtone profits, record sales, publishing and even endorsement deals so that rappers can truly afford the finer things in life like Maybachs. I don’t feel that the artist rapping about Maybachs have enough oppotunity to teach artist how to leverage themselves into a position of power over their own careers to demand this type of salary, but most record label execs should be responsible enough, especially after the Madoff scandal, and the Wall Street debacle to be honest with artists royalty percentages, and presenting them with honest record deals. After watching the movie “Cadillac Records” I am quickly seeing how HipHop has become the new early Rock n Roll, and every artist has to be there own Chuck Berry. If Maybach is the car to have in a Hip-Hop world. Every rapper should have a Maybach in there garage.
