Wednesday – leicester. kristy shows us the new rockfood magazine, it is lushious. there's a lovely piece about ffww and leictronica. we all admired pages lovely new bass rig, had a little natter with paul marshall too and he tells us that we vs. death thought we were good when we supported them up in sheffield which we were well happy about cos we think they're awesome! this town needs guns were awesome too with their trumpet and keyboard and hand claps. jeniferever weren't as good as we'd hoped as all the songs sounded very similar with their wash of echoey guitars and booming drums, but we enjoyed the tracks we knew, especially the sound of beating wings.
Thursday – dave's house (ashby). this was a really good party, so thanks for letting us play dave. we set up in his garage played a set which included an improvised high-bpm rave track. kush and will then took to their decks and microphone respectively and played some slow hip-hop stuff, which we then decided to join in with, starting with collins playing the drums and jack then me on bass. it was pretty fun jam we had. after a few more hours of drinking we retired home to the last night we'd sleep at home for over a week.
Friday – sheffield. the red house is a little pub, maybe a little bit like the plough, with its 'moody' lighting and ales. we happily received our free beer tokens (which someone (collins) forgot to use up!) and listened to an onslaught of digeridoo, violin, and electronic drum kit courtesy of ashley and friends. mr. opus came down to watch and handed me a flyer to one of the best line-ups this side of the year (battles, clark, feedle, tired irie.) Hopefully ffww will play another opus show very soon. We rolled anna-nicole down to luke's house and ventured into town to go to the washington, where we danced hilariously to some northern soul/motown (I'm not going to try and argue the differences, it's all the same to me) and then moved onto some hard dance at DQ's. Collins and I were definitely the most hardcore ravers in the club, for sure! We all passed out in Luke's house later at some early hour. I get up early to go to a Sheffield Hallam open day which was very dull. the rest of us went shopping. Collins got some new jeans, after realising he'd packed some rather small old ones, page got a tuner pedal.
Saturday – birmingham. "M1 is boring sir". another little pub. we arrived there early, as usual, so we sit and enjoy a nice pint and watch some locals get more and more drunk. we meet meg cavalanananana, a very sweet american girl with an acoustic guitar. "woop woop woop!" she didn't come and sit with us though, even though I asked her to, twice. haha. she gave me a beautiful hand-made cd though. I bet this was to show she's secretly in love with me. Dave the promotor was a legend, and said he'd put us on at the barfly. We play a very hot show and matt took a video of "what on earth" (we'll post it somewhere, sometime). We mosey ourselves down to jojo's house where we slowly collapse, with the entertainment of page with his so called smooosh (you'll see in the video), lizzy got home and keeps us amused with stories of canoeing and tally charts. bacon cobs for breakfast!
Sunday – london. "motorways are very very boring sir" There's a fucking bowling alley here! and space invaders! both for free! and £1 beer tokens! oh we love the beer tokens. I suck at bowling. Jack won (of course). Had lunch at euston station, as you do. MJ Hibbett was well funny and sang songs about being indie. We play our set, which included the awfully under-reheased smog song 'no dancing' which featured none other than the vocal wizardry of myself, james sztuka. it was fucking awful, sorry george. Dan of From The Sky fame turned up while we're playing this and looked very puzzled. we shall never speak of the smog cover again. my pedal board broke too, which pissed me off. we get more and more beer tokens off george and get a bit tipsy . oh, and money! imagine that! soon, it is time to go driving again. We fell out with our sat nav "babs" she doesn't like london, so we got very very lost driving round london, seeing all the tourist attractions until we finally escaped a good hour later. we drive to oxford and sleep in the van for the first time in a dark corner of some housing estate.
Monday – oxford. Mmm, the van smells delicious. A mix between feet, smoke, sweat and beer. We find a café and all have a full english, which no one except matt and I finished; pussies. We then went to the local swimming pool for a good swim and wash, collins wins the race, only one length though (smoking is bad!) After a trip to a very nice guitar shop, we get to the venue and slowly set up, have fun with the local dog, have a few pints, matt plays a good trick on page and we make some more cds up. Later, The Youngs Plan take to the stage, with their intricate youthmovies-style guitarwork, sounds awesome. "If I had a record label, I'd sign them." said Jack. They apparently have just recorded a new cd, so we'll look forward to hearing that hopefully very soon. The singer's voice breaks towards the end of one song. "that happens sometimes when you're still a teenager.." he says with a huge smile on his face. Vestible attack their instruments along to some occasional screamo-style vocals, making a huge sound. Very good stuff. We headline (cos collins put the gig on himself) and seem to go down well. Everything is great, until some BITCH ran off with our cash tin, right after we sell loads of merch. Luckily, collins had took some notes out not long before, but we reckon there must've been about £50 in coins in there too, so that kinda ruined our night. We head off, trying to forget about our little setback, to Wales via a few service stations with dance matts, porn and massage chairs . We slept in the van again, I can't even remember where.
Tuesday – newport. We spent our day at the seaside! we played cricket and I even won the first innings! Other activities included kite flying, collecting shells, looking around rockpools, and 2p arcade machines. We got about 80 points worth of tokens and got some amazing prizes like a mug with a rasta on it, some playing cards, and a bag of sweets. We found TJ's, which looked very much like the charlotte in leicester, except more leaky. Literally water pouring out of the ceiling onto marshall cabs and plug sockets. This was the worst gig of the tour. No one was there, played with some boring indie bands. Matt decided he wanted to sleep in his own bed, as we were pretty much driving staight past home anyway, so matt went home and we slept in the van again. NEVER GO HOME. more bacon in the morning, along with the company of matt's rats. collins was joyful to be returning to the world of myspace. oh, what a whore. We watched Little Miss Sunshine off box office.
Wednesday – leeds. our first gig up here, cos last time the baliffs came and shut the place down during sound checks! "I want to go for some proper food today." says collins. We end up at pizza hut. Dr. Wu's is a nice little bar with a tiny stage. We set the drums up sideways for a bit of variation on our on-stage feng shui. See our good pals Laura, Frizz, Dave, Celeste and the guys from Solus Locus (we played at tom's house once). Hot prophecy surprise us with their isis-ish 3-guitar drop-c slow chuggery, which we all very much enjoyed headbanging to. Itch were also amazing. Mathletically challenging, we kept trying to guess what was going to happen next, and got caught out on pretty much all occasions. Saddened that some place where you can smoke sheesha pipes was closed, we went back to laura's for fun times. hazily left for derby about 4:30pm
Thursday – derby. our second ever gig here after playing the flowerpot many a moon ago. Hello Ali town. John and Rob and Kristy came down too! their unexpected faces firstly brought fright, then warmth. Catharsis played some post-rock which I rather enjoyed as their lushious guitars loudly soothed my sleepy head. "BOTTLE OF WINE!" shouted page, many times. "OW! OW! OW! OW! OW!" shouted Gaz from Cousin Scampi under our instructions into collins' camera. The deirdres were fit. We went to a club to show derby our amazing dance skills. everyone praised us on our fresh moves. After we'd had enough praising, we went back to Ali's room, where we stayed almost horizontal until the late afternoon the following day. Some other people joined us for a bit; I don't know any of their names. I probably didn't even say anything. After looking around more guitar shops and watching some guys skating in the beer garden of the blue dog, we drive to nottingham with Ali.
Friday – nottingham. Ali can't find his key and goes home. Pretty knackered now. Made some more sweat and noise. some people like it. some crazy probably eastern-european guy mumbles something about rock music and then goes on to play harmonica along to the music through the PA. Got paid again, which was nice. The page, collins and jack go to Panic in Leicester to party on and finish off the tour with a bang, but I am way too knackered and don't want to suck the energy from everyone else so I retire myself to the non-hardcore box and go to sleep in my own bed. page, collins and jack don't return home till sunday afternoon (today) saturday they awoke with some big head aches and got entertained by johns cat "biffy", spent the rest of the afternoon watching collins watch hot girls walk by the firebug (hot sunny day), drinking starts again for the last time, they go see frank turner at the charlotte and stop for another night at john'n'robs. today (sunday) involved waking up early to shout 9 and to try and get home before page starts work, unlucky.
tour ends :(
collins has taken alot of tour video footage so hopefully that'll be something to watch in the next week or so once its all edited.
thanks to everyone who came to see us at any of those shows, we certainly had a very very good time.
thanks to matt for driving us around and putting up with us for so long.
thanks to luke & chris, jojo, laura, ali and john'n'rob for lending us your floors/sofas and not minding our "lets party" plans.
