Category: Art and Photography

in early spring of this year a friend of ours in austin, texas (laura thomas) asked if i'd be interested in playing at a homeless shelter in austin during south by southwest. we said yes. she asked us to pick between two days and we said that it didn't matter to us. she said that she needed us to decide so....we flipped a coin and chose friday. she then informed us that we would be playing at the homeless shelter with billy bragg! billy and i ended up having a great conversation and he enjoyed my set so much that he asked me if i'd be interested in doing some shows with him. i was more than happy to take him up on his offer.

me and billy at caritas soup kitchen in austin, texas.

billy at the alladin theater in portland, oregon.

i didn't have much spare time to take photographs but i did manage to take a few. here are some random images.

salmon ladder in seattle, washington.

fishermen in fog seattle, washington.

i have no idea what this game is called or how to play it but i really enjoyed watching the old men sit around playing it. two men would play while a dozen or so would stand around cheering and laughing (most likely trash talking). i watched for two hours or so. san francisco, california.

i'm not sure whose grave this is but i found it to be interesting. hollywood, california.

grant, mushi, billy, vaughn and andy. billy is blessed with some wonderful folks around him. there was no shortage of laughs back stage!

if you have any photos of the shows please feel free to post them here.

i was without wheels and i only had about five hours to explore san francisco. i'm gonna have to make a point to visit his grave on my next visit. i've visited at whole lot of graves over the last ten or twelve years. if anyone is interested i could maybe make a blog thingy about some of the graves i've visited? mother jones, jack kerouac, jesse owens, robert johnson, falco, vlad tepes, william s. burroughs, the list goes on and on.

i'm glad that you like the song (the peoples day). i wrote it after a friends son was complaining about how boring history class was. i tried my best to explain to him that history is awesome. then i told him a few stories about every day people who made an impact on our daily lives. his classes never talked about chaves or milk or the haymarket massacre etc. i somehow reached him. later that night i wrote that song.

i'm hoping to be back to portland soon. the folks at the show were some of the nicest folks i've met in the last year or so.

You take excellent photos, Mr Gibbs. Do you mind if I pinch a few for my screensaver? It's where I put picures of heroes and other such pictures for support and inspiration. I'll wait till I get your permission before doing so, of course.

Keep the Soul and Love the Folk.

Excelsior!

Your photos are wonderful! Your pal Heather turned me on to your music but I think you have a solid future in photography if you should break your guitar, or if it should be confiscated next time you come to Detroit (will there be a next time?)

heather is awesome! the world would be a better place if we could find a way to clone her.

i haven't been to detroit in quite a while but i'm willing to give it another go. as much as i like to pick on detroit i still like it a hell of a lot more than hollywood. ;)

i've been strip searched on two different trips to detroit and i'm the most boring guy at the party. we'll have to try to keep me away from the fuzz.

god bless smoky robinson and go tigers!

Damn you are so talented Otis! Photos are amazing, as usual.

Did you meet Billy's manager Peter Jenner? Such a smart man!

Hope I run into you soon out there.

Posting any pictures of mine on the same page as yours is a complete embarrassment -- but has that ever stopped me. They didn't let us take photos in Portland, but I have Seattle show pictures as well as other pictures from that trip posted here: http://entertainment.webshots.com/album/555083467QGDJpr

Lighting was difficult (esp. when you don't know how to take pics), but this is probably the best one I got of you:

And, of course, I love this one too:

Okay, I just noticed html is disabled which I guess is what the direct picture links would be. And I can't find how to edit my comment; if it's possible. But those pictures are in the same album I linked to at the beginning.

BTW, it was great getting to see you. I loved that you mixed up your sets both nights I saw as well. Hope you make it to Chicago again soon.

Otis the game the old men are playing looks like a Chinese game called Go, I believe it is what the game called Othello is based on. The only reason I recognise it is we have a large and very old Chinese Community here in Liverpool.

For what it's worth, the game is chinese chess. It's played all over the place in Toronto's downtown Chinatown. You'll see groups of older gentlemen crowding around these boards in food courts and parks, chasing victory with cannons and elephants.
