Stolen Moments with Maiden Speech – THE ZOO – Feb 2008

There is a girl watching the show.  Her lids flutter, her eyes widen, her hand gently taps the metal pole as if to play the chords she hears in the songs. Her neck arches back gentlly when she hears her favourite part of Strange Girl. She sways to the beat just enough not to knock over her boyfriend.

Pascalle is dancing.
She bounces.
Her hands explode.
New gestures delight her.
And the audience.
Her body moves before she knows it will.
She is That Feeling.

Dancers appear.   They inhabit the world of the Gypsy's Wife.  They are exclamation points and punctuate the stories in the song.

Almaryse is singing.
She yearns.
Her mouth unfurls.
Sound escapes.
The instinct was right.
And so is the audience.
Her body can only contain the music for so long until it must escape again.
My Sister is whole again.

Glitter precipitates and the stage is wet with it during Something in The Water.  The dancers evaporate from the stage and reform amongst the audience.  They melt away when the song does.

Who Invented This indeed?   A man regards the girls from a distance. His fingers cling to the camera.  His toes dance in the tips of his shoes and betray the stillness of his demeanour.  The maidens hover between irreverence and total sincerity. He reads the moments the maidens construct.  He knows that he understands them. No one else in the audience can.  He points his camera.  They are captured.  He will keep them with him.
