6 EDINBURGH TIPS ....
.. ..
The Edinburgh Fringe, the highlight of the calendar,
is upon us. HURRAH! BUT with no Aurora Nova and the evil hegemony of the big 4
venues and their self-styled Edinburgh Comedy Festival, it may look as though
the heart has been ripped out of the thing, but there is still much to look
forward to. Here are 5 professional tips and a personal one, that would also be
professional under normal circumstances. ....
.. ..
a) Daniel Kitson’s new show at The Stand or his play
The Interminable Suicide of Gregory Church at The Traverse. As all proper
comedians know he is the best there is.....
.. ..
b) Hans Teuwen at Underbelly pasture. A great comedian
who makes most others look futile.....
.. ..
c) Nick Pynn – Colours Of The Night at Inlingua.
Brilliant one-man art-folk orchestra in a 12 seater room. With free wine and
low lighting. Take someone you love. Superb.....
.. ..
d) Barflies by Gridiron. Traverse presents one of the
greatest theatre experimental companies in the world doing a site-specific
piece about Charles Bukowski, drunk poet loved by immature men. Should be
great.....
.. ..
e) Bridget Christie – My Daily Mail Hell at Gilded
Balloon 6.30. I live with this woman and have also lived with this. It is funny
and true. You will see there is no stylistic or psychological overlap between
us, which makes you wonder… Due to a cock-up, this isn’t advertised in the
Fringe prog so please seek it out at your earliest convenience.....
.. ..
f) Dick Gaughan – St Brides, 17th Aug. Last
year, the fringe gig by this Scottish folk veteran was one of the most punk
rock things I ever saw, leaving me utterly speechless with astonishment at the
power and passion.....
.. ..
AND REMEMBER, in these skinny CREDIT CRUNCH times the
best CREDIT CRUNCH CABARET value shows remain those at THE STAND, where you can
see the greatest comics in the world in tiny rooms for a tenner or less,
despite them not being in the self-styled Edinburgh Comedy Festival. Or, to be
perfectly frank, check out THE FREE FRINGE, which is FREE. Then spend the money
you save on someone who needs it and is probably losing £1000s. ....
.. ..
2) IF YOU PREFER A MILDER
COMEDIAN, PLEASE ASK FOR ONE ....
… is the title of the new live stand-up show. It will
be run in at The Stand, Edinburgh, Weds 5th Aug – Sunday 30th
Aug, not 17th, 7.45, £10.
This is a relatively small room and over half the seats are now sold.....
.. ..
STEWART
LEE....
IF
YOU PREFER A MILDER COMEDIAN, PLEASE ASK FOR ONE....
.. ..
Work in progress, towards a
new touring show, from the comedian currently fashionable amongst broadsheet
newspaper critics due to his BBC2 series Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle. ....
.. ..
Stew says, “In this show, an
account of something that happened to me in a coffee shop will be used as a
convenient framing device for disparate material possibly concerning English
Heritage, Top Gear, The Olympics, emigration, prawns, Bella Pasta, The National
Trust, farmers, DH Lawrence, piglets, cathedrals, bees, Iggy Pop, cider
adverts, riots etc etc.”....
.. ..
As usual, expect …....
1)
Some
punchy stuff near the top....
2)
inexplicable
hostility towards relatively innocuous figures....
3)
silences....
4)
repetition....
5)
sudden
and/or gradual shifts in tone, velocity and volume ....
6)
long
routines experimenting with form rather than content....
7)
the
possibility of failure....
8)
a quasi-serious bit at the end.....
9)
New
for 2009! A song!....
.. ..
2009 is the 22nd
fringe appearance by this obtuse man.....
.. ..
“Lee
destroys his topics with the precision, relentlessness and brutality of a
medieval torturer; repeatedly and meticulously attacking the same small point
until it becomes weakened to the point of collapse. Shorter jokes would be
funnier, but nowhere near as transfixing, as the audience are compelled to see
just how far he dare push it, and left to marvel at the man’s sheer audacity.
There’s some tension as to whether it will work or not, and occasionally it
doesn’t.” – Steve Bennett, Chortle....
“Apparently
ill at ease with both speech and movement, Lee’s presence creates a kind of
negative energy, a black hole of vacancy, pregnant with lack of meaning.” – Tim
Out, Time Out London....
“His
whole tone is one of complete, smug condescension” – Roz Laws, Birmingham
Sunday Mercury....
.. ..
“I
thought, ‘I'm funnier than Stewart Lee. If he can do it, I can’.” Al Murray,
The Times....
