"Before arriving at the Larimer Lounge, I took ten shots of vodka. I can’t leave bottles of vodka unfinished, they go bad, right? After sloppily shoving ten dollars toward the door guy and dragging my hollow, Irish leg to the back of the room, I realized I’d missed Solar Bear’s first of four songs. The newly five-pieced Solar Bear had, behind them, several 600 Watt floodlights shining on the audience. Two days later, I can still see their blaze beneath my eyelids. Crouching behind other show goers, I stole glances of singer Marcus Tallitsch as he growled and screamed his guts and bile all over his cocked, 45 degree microphone. The varying levels of the band’s energy reflected the varying levels of each song’s energy. While the band was tight and well practiced, there were times they seemed worlds apart, disconnected from each other. Their music, fortunately, in no way suffered. The opening riff on “The Ghost Of Anton Levay,” was the entire reason I pounded my drinks fast enough to make it in time for the opener. I’d been given Solar Bear’s EP Modern Architects a week earlier and found myself repeatedly restarting that intro without any consideration to my roommate or neighbors.
