so the dvd came out.
happy that it is in the world.
hope more folks will get to see it.

as many of you can tell it is light on the extras as compared to my previous dvd releases.

everything at the studio was a struggle.
for instance: they didn't want to do a commentary track cause they felt that it wouldn't help sales.
i didn't have it in me to fight anymore.
whatever.

so:
niko, my friend who did the doc on the dvd came up with a novel idea.
we recorded a commentary track ourselves.
we're gonna post it on a site soon, http coming soon.
you can play it and watch the flick and hopefully you'll enjoy it.

i do hope to do a big special edition at some point. but for that to happen the dvd is gonna have to sell.
i got a lot of extras in my bag so who know maybe if you all write to criterion they'll get interested (suggest the fountain as a title: mulvaney@criterion.com).

they've been into pi and requiem but because the first run of dvd's had so many extras they didn't know what else they could add. but the fountain...

i hope you are all well. i've been writing. stuff is coming. gonna know what we are doing next soon enough.

best,
da

I don't understand the studio mentality at times, you have to both hate and love them, there able to get us to work on wonderful projects that change our lives and make us who we are as both human beings and also spritual beings. Because we can express the very soul of who we are on film and share it with the world.

Were able to share a thought or an emotion from the pictures that are put together and carfully painted on the movie screen. But at the same time the studios can rule with an iron hand telling us where and when you should express your slef and where not to.

So I guess it's a love hate thing and sometimes you cannot get everyhting you want. you take the bad with the good, as you know. So hopefully someday your collection of extras will get on where you want them.

I think they will, when you live and work from the heart no matter what happens all the good stuff will rise to the top. Continued sussess and help from Gods inspriation on your future projects.

Best Vincent Guastini

DA's nick name VG.

The DVD sold out before 3pm at the Burbank Best Buy. I grabbed the last of the widescreen versions. ;) So this is a very good sign.

Thanks for putting the time in to do a commentary. I can't wait to hear it.

Take care,

Chad

The dvd won't be out here for some time, but through the marvels of the internet, I'll have it soon enough.

And this is the kind of movie that really deserves the special treatment. I mean, the great thing about this movie is that although it is not for everyone, those that connect with it, REALLY connect with it. Or at least, that's my view. This could really be a dvd-classic, because of the need to watch it many times.

And I don't mind double-dipping on this film at all.

Again, thank you so very much for this film.

Already sent a letter to Criterion, and one to Aint It Cool suggesting that they let people know wthat they should do the same.

I already left you a comment on your main page about how much "The Fountain" meant to me, that I saw it three times in theaters (which accounts for the three times it was seen in theaters, in case you were wondering), and what a great influence you are on my own work, so I won't waste too many words repeating it all here.

At any rate, I bought my copy of "The Fountain" at midnight on Tuesday and it hasn't left my DVD player since.

I look forward to being able to say the same about a Special Edition.

size=2>Down under in the Au, waiting on my copy to arrive, managed to catch it once in Sydney, where it only played briefly in a couple of theatres, it's so beautiful, had to contend with the book and score so far, so really looking forward to seeing the moving image again. The Criterion Edition gets my vote. F'kin Studios.

Its a film thats overlooked and not to many consumers know about it yet, even though it is targeted for a specific audience, it is a very well done piece of art. Out off all the films in the world, "The Fountain" is by far, my most favorite and I would love to see a better release on dvd for it. The edition that was just released did not compliment the film as well as a dvd from your company could. Darren Aronofsky deserves a better release with all the extras that can accompany a film.

size=2>Thank you for enhancing films to the best they can be and I hope that you might take into consideration another great film of our time.

size=2>-Keaton

I also wrote to criterion Darren and I have to say its ingenius of you to release your own commentary track. Hey if Lynch can make films without studio help so can you. :)

Anyway I have to say The Fountain really inspired me to be a film maker, and ironically I will soon be living in Brooklyn, New York, and going to the School of Visual Arts there.

Btw the documentary on the fountain was fantastic, totally no bullshit stuff. Being the dvd was so stripped down I expected a pretty nonsense documentary but I was pleasently surprised. My favorite moment from the whole thing was you messing with the doctor that Hugh slammed up against the window, I nearly died laughing. "Sure we didn't change the glass on you? Are you sure? Are you sure? ... ACTION!"

I yearn for more!

I loved "The Fountain". It moved me. It is one of the most beautiful movies that I have ever seen. I hope that it finds it's audience on DVD and with true film lovers. That is who really matters. I know that critical and commercial success is nice to have as well, but the studios these days are too focused on that and not as focused on making truly important movies that mean something to people.

Best of luck.

Well, i wasnt surprised to have my suspicions verified. For some reason, I knew the studio was WB.
That wasn't because "everything at the studio was a struggle", was it?
Actually, YES!
When it comes to brains, and the WB execs, I swear, they thought God train, and they missed it.
I am more amazed when a great film is actually produced by WB, as a result of some of the dumbest decisions and (so-called) thought process there.
Darren, it is very understandable that you didn't have it in you to fight anymore. I guess the only good thing is, they had a modicum of intelligence to get it filmed in the first place.
At least that much was done.

I really enjoyed the movie and plan to watch it quite a few more times. I really think this will be a film that more and more people will come to appreciate as time goes on. I think you knocked it out of the park with Hugh and Rachel. I don't think Brad or Cate could have done better. I will buy a special edition DVD if they make one. Can't wait for your next work. MJ

Wrote a short paragraph to Criterion with The Fountain title suggestion. Here's the reply:

"Hi there,

We have no plans at this time for "The Fountain," but thank you for writing
in with your title suggestion!

Sincerely,

Tamara"

Hopefully if enough of us do this, they'll get the fecking hint. If shit like the Wes Anderson films can get an immediate Criterion release, The Fountain sure as hell better get one in the near future.

Also, I see on imdb.com there's a page titled "The Ark (2010)".. There's no more information than that, so I'm crossing my fingers in hopes that it's referring to your 'Biblical Epic'.

Do you make "The Fight" (I think it's the title) cause you're broke? Or something like it? It's weird to imagine you making an order (?) film.

Stopped at the store and picked up the HD DVD on the way home. The picture looks beautiful. Totally enjoyed watching it again as if it was the first time (even though it was like my 5th).

I was looking for a commentary track and was definitely looking forward to that. The studio saying a commentary track would hurt sales is a fucking bullshit excuse. People who don't want to hear that wouldn't even listen to it (most people don't listen to it), but the fans always look forward to it.

If you ever put out a special addition with more features, I will definitely pick it up. Good luck with sales on this release and I look forward to your next movie.

Light on the extras or no, I was just thrilled to have the movie. I missed it in theatres due to my insane work schedule, so it was quite an event on Tuesday when it came out. Having now seen it, I question some of the reviews I've read... Let me begin by sayin that the movie was Amazing. Prior to my seeing it, however, Clint Mansell posted on his blog that the movie was unpopular both critically and commercially. Having read reviews (both the professional and not-so-professional kind) I have this to say: For the most part, people didn't understand it. I don't normally say that kind of thing about people who don't share my tastes, particularly about something as subjective as movies, but the reveiws seem to share that common thread. The phrases "I didn't understand" or "why did he" were rather prevalent. I, for one, thought the movie was one of the most brilliant things I've ever seen. One of the earlier posts for this blog mentioned that people who connect to this movie REALLY connect to it. I'd say that's for sure. This movie hit me on so many levels, it was really quite hard to believe. The uniqueness of the story and the way it was presented was flat-out awe inspiring (no cute movie reference intended), the acting was as close to perfect as humanly possible, and the fact that The Fountain did not receive more accolades is shocking. So, for what it's worth, I love this movie as much as I love your previous two, and that's saying something. I look forward to feeding Criterion more money when they release a special edition. Take care.

just wanted to say i thought 'the fountain' was striking, poignant, and beautiful. by far the most original film that was released last year, so try not to let the system beat you down. i was lucky enough to catch the pre-release Q&A at the pickford theatre w/matty, james and clint, all of whom have great reverence for your work and method. keep doing what you are doing, keep making brilliant films, and keep putting your stamp on the world of cinema.
