Hey all,

This is Warren the infamous bass player of the band, and I just recently had a thought about inspiration...

I went to a show the other day that was great for a lot of reasons:  the band was solid musically, they were creative, I was moved by their presentation (stage set-up, enthusiasm of the band, lights etc.), and so on.  Then someone who I recognized at the show told me "I sucked" (trying to say that the band was soooo great, i wasn't good anymore).  As if by hearing this band, the highest form of anything artistic/worth while was just reached, never to be discovered again...and I don't mean to dis on anyone here,  but by saying that to me he totally missed the point!

What I was actually feeling through this band wasn't that I didn't compare and could never put together anything as meaningful as them.  On the contrary, I felt very excited to impact others like this band impacted me.  I think that when art is at it's best it encourages others to respond, not jacks them upside the head with a "2x4" of "look how much better this is than you'll ever do...". (pardon me for using the word "jacks" and "2x4" in a band blog...)

So the next time you hear something that "rocks your socks off," (see earlier apology...) please avoid the post-experience-beat-up session about how they can do (fill in the blank) better than you, or how you could do better than them if you only had (fill in the blank) like they do.  That's not the point of it!  The point is to be inspired to join in the expression, to "spread the wealth." (again with the slogans...) We're all "on the same team" (yikes...sorry). So what's something you can do to share the inspiration with those around you?!

Every time I've gone to see Monarch I'm blown away. It's very inspiring to watch and I know the feeling you are describing. On a side note, are you by chance talking about As Tall As Lions at The Showbox on Monday? The first time I saw those guys live I was entranced. Just a guess. Keep up the great music guys!

Yeah definitely!  I did really like "As Tall As Lions" and I didn't expect them to be as good as they were.  of course my favorite part was that the bass player was almost a front man...maybe you'll see you up front at our next show...

I totally get what you mean.  It's difficult to not let the excitment and inspiration turn against you!  Just some reassurance though, you guys are on the "inspiring" side, so I wouldn't worry about it :)

i think you guys are rather inspiring yourself. and i understand...soemtimes i write and i feel like crap about it but then i remember that i can't compare myself to others...i would only be making copies of other musicians. that's not the point. let yourself be inspired and then write something that is YOU.

I'm here to tell you that Monarch has successfully added to the collective expression just as much as any other band I've heard (and I've heard oodles!).

Of course, to echo you, this isn't a competition, and As Tall as Lions is a fantastic band--no doubt there, but what I'm confused about is the fact that someone told you you sucked!

Someone really said that to you? If so, that's terrible...

Regardless, I traveled to Seattle this past spring to visit UW for an open house and saw you guys play a mere 5 songs (it was a short set that night, you opened for Barcelona), and now I feel like I want to fly up there from LA just to see you play 5 more on Dec. 13th, haha.

Keep up the amazing work. :)
