Introduction

In the fall of 2001 at a music venue in Melbourne FL, bassist, David Pastorius met guitarist Al Brodeur and they soon began writing music together. They began working with various drummers and soon met a talented local percussionist, Anthony Darmana who has been a part of the band since the early days. Their troubles in finding the right drummer came to an end when they met 20 year old, drumming maestro Alex Petrosky in 2005. With this line up of 4 extremely talented musicians, they went into the studio to record their masterful instrumental compositions. While in the studio, they approached a legendary Space Coast keyboard artist, Ken Page, to add his keyboard virtuosity to two of the tracks on the album. Collectively, the group has brought together a musical combination of styles and techniques that exemplifies their contemporary jazz - rock fusion sound, interlaced with island rhythms and funktified grooves.

With the release of their first CD, 'David Pastorius and Local 518' on the Japanese P-Vine Records label in May of 2007, it is now on sale worldwide. Recorded at Studio 101 in Melbourne FL, the 12 tracks exemplify the creative and unique abilities of each member in the band. David's bass lines and lead solo's are the foundation upon which the music shines. His remarkable vision is painted upon the musical canvas, brought to life with the incredible talents of each member. Al's guitar work glides gently along side the melodic bass lines while Alex and Anthony transform the soundscape into a rhythmical masterpiece and Ken's outstanding abilities and experience infuse the music with a soul all its own. Combined, the talents and technical skills of all, create a sound that takes the listener to far away lands and even out of this world. Local 518 has delivered a true musical masterpiece.

At the 2007 Jazz Funk Expo in Japan, held from November 30 till December 3, 2007, Local 518 showcased their debut CD to the incredible fan base they acquired since the release of the CD in Japan. With performances beginning at 'Billboard Live' in Osaka, to 'Bluenote' in Nagoya, and ending at 'Club Quattro' in Tokyo, Local 518 sold out the venues with very enthusiastic crowds. David also held in store clinics at Tower Records in Shibuya and at Shinjuku in Tokyo.

David Pastorius

David was born in Minneapolis, MN on February 3rd, 1977 and moved to Melbourne, Florida in 1978. He started playing bass at the age of 15. Interestingly enough, at the time, David was barely aware that his uncle, Jaco Pastorius, was considered a bass icon and visionary. Deep appreciation for Jaco's musical genius, along with his compositional and arrangement skills is evident in David's outstanding ablities and musical accomplishments.

When David began performing professionally, his skills quickly progressed, joining numerous local bands typically of the rock-funk genre. At the age of 18 he started writing songs with his cousin, Mary Pastorius and her band Queen Mary. In 1997 David started recording and playing live with Queen Mary, including a showcase at the Hollywood Jazz Fest.

By this time he was already gigging steadily on the Space Coast of east central Florida. He also did a self-financed tour of the US with an original hip-hop act, playing such clubs as the Whiskey A-Go-Go and the now defunct CBGB's.

Then in 2003, David was asked by Peter Graves, the leader of the Jaco Pastorius Big Band to play "Opus Pocus" as one of the featured bassists (alongside such talents as Richard Bona, Jimmy Haslip, Christian McBride, Victor Bailey, Marcus Miller, Gerald Veasley and Victor Wooten) on the Head's Up release "Word Of Mouth Revisited". One can hear on this track the same relentless stamina, attack and intensity reminiscent of his world renowned uncle.

In 2004, David performed at the NAMM Conference in Anaheim, CA with Queen Mary and the Jaco Pastorius Big Band. In 2005, he played Fender's Bass Bash at Hollywood's Musicians Institute with bassists Tony Franklin, Kim Stone, Roscoe Beck, Chris Maresh and Reggie Hamilton along with guitarists Greg Koch and Mike Keneally and drummer John Calarco. As an endorsed Fender representative, David gave clinics around Florida with Tony Franklin, Greg Koch and John Calarco.

In early 2006, Peter Graves called upon David again, this time to join the Jaco Pastorius Big Band as one of the three featured performers, along with Gerald Veasley and Randy Brecker, for their dates at the Blue Note in Tokyo and Motion Blue in Yokohama. On this trip, David made numerous contacts which proved to be instrumental in getting signed to the heralded independent label, P-Vine Records.

David plays a Fender 4-string bass guitar, utilizing a Hartke 3500 Bass Amplifier with two XL410 speaker cabinets. He uses no special effects. As his uncle Jaco used to say, "It's all in the hands." David is an Endorsed Representative of Hartke Bass Amps and Fender Musical Instruments.

Al Broduer

Albert Brodeur was born in Bridgeport Connecticut. Al has been playing piano since he was six years old, learning from his father, who is an accomplished pianist, and also a teacher living in Stuart, FL. Throughout high school in Avon CT, Al played the tenor saxophone in a local jazz ensemble. While enrolled in Louisiana State University, he was inspired to pick up guitar after a weekend attendance at the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Al has performed in numerous local bands throughout Baton Rouge LA, Boston MA, and Fort Pierce FL. For the past 5 years he has been focusing his energy performing with Local 518 in Melbourne, FL.

Anthony Darmana

Anthony was born in Long Branch NJ in 1975. He learned to play the trombone in school and performed with the Greencastle-Antrim concert band from 1985-1989. His love for music led him to learn to play the guitar and bass and he performed each of these skills as a guitarist with the band Siva, and as the bassist for classic rock coverband Harrisburg. Anthony began playing hand drums in the early 1990's and became an inspiration in his community, promoting drumcircles all around Florida. In 2001, he co-founded the Melbourne Drum Tribe. He has performed with the Rhythm Hearders, Purl Baylee, and currently with Local 518 and Nuclear Umbrella. His speciality is blending Latin, African, and Middle Eastern rhythms as he masterfully plays the congas, d'jembe, doumbek and various ambient percussion instruments. His keen sense of meter and texture lend an air of exotic ethnicity to Local 518's overall sound.

Alex Petrosky

Born July 21, 1985 in the local area, Alex began playing the drums at age 5. As he grew, the local music scene greatly encouraged him to hone his skills. He has studied under Brian Slawson and Danny Gottlieb and is well versed in symphonic/contemporary percussion. He attended Berklee College of Music from 2003-05. He studied with Mike Mangini while there. His main influences are Stewart Copeland, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Jeff Porcaro. Alex's remarkable drumming ability shines both in the studio and on stage. His versatility and stamina creates a drum score equal to that of the drum icons he is influenced by.

Ken Page

Ken Page began his musical career at the early age of 8. While earning his bachelors degree at the "Swinney Conservatory of Music", he organized and performed with Concert Bands, Jazz Ensembles, Brass Choirs, Orchestras, and Pop/Rock bands. He was later accepted into the elite, "Eastman School of Music" for his outstanding abilities. Post graduate work in Electronic Music at the "Boston School of Electronic Music" was followed by studies in Film Scoring, Jazz, and Improvisational Techniques with Jack Dejohnette, Dave Holland, Karl Berger, and Stu Martin in New York

Ken became musical director in St. Louis, at the Hazelwood School district where his concert bands won top state honors 4 years in a row. He also was conductor and arranger for the 14 piece Las Vegas road show "Body and Soul".

Highlight's in his career are when he performed with various popular big name acts such as Sly Stone, The Drifters, The Coasters, The Classics IV, Bo Diddley,The Grassroots, John Waite and was the featured artist in his own group "Classique".

Ken formed MadPhat Production company and its affiliates while living in Atlanta, GA. He currently runs 'Frontpage Music / MadPhat Productions' in Melbourne, FL. Ken's years of experience are a great asset to Local 518. Since recording with them in the studio, Ken now performs with them live and has incorporated his electrifying keyboards to all the music. And if you thought that was all, Ken also has added to the music his talents as a player of both the flute and the trumpet.
