Australian unions have today called for strong leadership from both sides of politics to ensure that the rights and dignity of asylum seekers is respected. The ACTU has cautioned against the use of rhetoric to demonise asylum seekers who are fleeing dangerous situations in their home countries and have asked Australia for help and safety. “Unions believe fair, permanent migration benefits the whole community and enriches our culture and society; as well as contributing significantly to our economic growth,” says ACTU President Sharan Burrow. In a separate issue, unions have also called for Federal Parliament not to allow any further amendments to the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme that would weaken the scheme. "A strengthened and passed CPRS would enhance Australia's ability to push for a strong global agreement at Copenhagen and grow clean energy jobs in Australia while a weakened one will not," Ms Burrow said. She said no further concessions should be made to the big polluters.
