sábado, dezembro 13, 2008

Word is the word. What's the word - word up. The longest running word in hip-hop history. Word. Word to the mother. Word to Big Bird. Word is bond.

I make these Top Ten Lists every year for a local rag in Peg city. It's only right I share it with all of you and expect a list of your own in return. For the love of music... and that's my word. Last year LCD Soundsystem, Radiohead, Bad Brains and Jay-Z's "American Gangster" topped my list. In 2006 it was J Dilla's "Donuts" alongside Amy Winehouse and "Game Theory" by The Roots. In 2005 it was an easy decision with Common's "Be" album as well as Damian Marley, Sharon Jones and M.I.A's "Arular" album. And time keeps tickin'. Word Up.

TOP TEN LIST 2008:

01 Q-TIP "THE RENAISSANCE"
This decision may be biased. If it wasn't for Q-Tip I wouldn't be rapping today. So this guy can fart on a record and I'll still put it to the top of my list. He is a survivor, and finally he's back looking good and keeping the Tribe vibe alive. I enjoy this entire album.

02 SANTIGOLD "SANTIGOLD"
Santigold is the eye-opener artist of the year. The word-of-mouth artist of the year. And probably the most exciting. Her flow and vocal delivery is ear catching and diverse. I heard 3 seconds of "Shove It" and immediately wanted to know who that artist was. With the right production, she'll be that good for a long time.

03 MARVIN GAYE "HERE, MY DEAR REMIXED"
I'm not a fan of remix projects that tamper with original genius. But this is clever. It doesn't degrade the music, it enhances it. Kick drums and percussion all in the right places. Keys and synths used properly... and no silly house remixes. The smartest part of this project is taking Marvin's excessive backing vocals and using them upfront. All his vocal tracks are so good it doesn't matter where you place them.

04 TV ON THE RADIO "DEAR SCIENCE"
This is my 'getting better with age' pick. This is TVOTR's third album - but easily their best. I keep coming back to it and experiencing something different. "Shout Me Out" is one of the smartest records of the year.

05 ERYKAH BADU "NEW AMERYKAH, PT1"
Making contact with a favourite artist can really alter the way you continue to support them. I met Badu 2 years ago in Texas... I even kissed her cheek after our chat. I should have never washed my lips. She is so endearing, intriguing and mysterious. I asked her 3 questions. She asked me at least seven or eight. I'm a fan because she's an artist... a pure artist. I know she whipped this album together, and it's still SO good.

06 OCOTE SOUL SOUNDS "THE ALCHEMIST MANIFESTO"
Music lovers - please find this album and buy it. It's smooth and groovy. It's worldly and intricate. It's the kind of album you want to play when you don't know what you want to play. I love it.

07 ONE DAY AS A LION "ONE DAY AS A LION"
I've waited a long time to hear what Zach de la Rocha was going to do after his Rage years. This EP is the one record I had with me on every tour we did this summer and fall. It's simplicity and anger grabbed me. This EP sounds like one long song, but it all makes sense and it's necessary and effective.

08 MOKA ONLY "CARROTS AND EGGS"
Moka is some what of a scientist to me. I'm a man of stamina (it's probably my stubborn nature), but this guy can put out track after track - album after album. And I tend to like all of them. This madman has recently graduated from the school of J Dilla with his production and lyrical approach, but he still managed to make it Moka.

09 GUILTY SIMPSON "ODE TO THE GHETTO"
Speaking of the school of J Dilla (which is very important to me) this album keeps the dirty dirty beats alive. Guilty (with the help of Black Milk's production) is the only emcee that can keep Dilla's vision alive. Thick nasty beats: hear "The Real Me", "Pigs" and "Footwork". I miss J Dilla - but Guilty Simpson will do just fine.

10 KANYE WEST "808s AND HEARTBREAK"
This is turning out to be my guilty pleasure of the year... although it shouldn't be a guilty pleasure at all. My peers are hating on this record hard, but I have a soft spot for Kanye. Maybe I secretly admire his 'I don't give a shit' approach. Either way you can't deny this dude had the worst year of his life by losing his mother and fiance in a matter of months. Anyone that can turn that around and express it artistically gets my vote. "Heartless", "Paranoid" and "Bad News" are great.

Feel free to drop your Top 10 or Top 5 - it's all good

(until the next b l o g)

dagnabit!

I forgot to add my 5 Honorable Mentions. Every music nerd that makes these lists should have 'the list after the list'. It's only right. So these five titles were damn good this year and deserve the highly regarded honorable mention:

01 JOSE JAMES "THE DREAMER"
02 D-SISIVE "LIKE THIS (PLUS 3)"
03 MENAHAN STREET BAND "MAKE THE ROAD BY WALKING"
04 THE ROOTS "RISING DOWN"
05 BLACK KEYS "ATTACK & RELEASE"

Unfortunately, my musical year wasn't as diverse as it should be. I pretty much listened to the same genre most of the year. Singer-songwriters ruled 2008 for me -- I didn't discover any new metal bands, and outside of Shad, no hip-hop that I didn't already know about. While my list may not be sufficiently "complete", there are still some note-worthy albums on it, so I'll post it anyway to give this blog a completely different flavour.

1. Hawksley Workman - Between the Beautifuls
Best album he's put out in 7 years.

2. Priscilla Ahn - A Good Day
Her voice is to DIE for... if you haven't heard her sing, do it NOW.

3. Sarah Slean - The Baroness
While it wasn't the masterpiece I was hoping for, she still put together an interest album that again sounds different from her previous releases.

4. Coldplay - Viva la Vida
They got more interesting and took more risks, and they're the better for it.

5. Newton Faulkner - Hand Built By Robots
Biggest new discovery of 2008. The guy's crazy acoustic guitar skills are superior to almost anyone out there, and he doesn't take himself too seriously, either (on the album or live).

6. Rachael Yamagata - Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart
A more interesting release than her debut, if for no other reason then the brief second CD that ups the rock potion and goes in a much different direction than her smooth melancholy she's famous for.

7. Snow Patrol - A Hundred Million Suns
There may not be any huge hits yet like their previous albums, as a whole, it's the best and most complete album they've released to date.

8. We Are Scientists - Brain Thrust Mastery
The ridiculously underrated NYC indie-rockers are big in the UK and the rest of Europe, but they should be big everywhere. Far more interesting than their debut.

9. Rue Royale - Rue Royale
This Chicago/UK husband & wife team finally released a full-length CD, and their minimalist approach to acoustic guitar and dual vocals is unique and beautiful.

10. Opeth - Watershed
If I listened to metal more these days, this might have placed higher. Extremely solid album, though I'd expect nothing less from this guys.

Honourable mentions go to usual faves Death Cab for Cutie, Joshua Radin, and Danny Michel, along with Hawksley's second 2008 release and new discovery Breanne Duren.

Jose James – The Dreamer LP
Sublime album from this massively talented jazz vocalist, keep your ears open for new material from him in the new year. The real piece to catch is the limited 10” of “Equinox/Resolution”, but they have been sold out for a long time….

Flying Lotus – Los Angeles LP
Glitchy beats at their finest , this album is a pretty heady listen but some of the tracks are just undeniable. “GNG BNG” & “Parisian Goldfish” are two of my favs.

Q-Tip – The Renaissance LP
Q-tip makes his return in fine form, creating a solid blend of classic sounds with some new fresh ideas. This album was road trip/tour material for the Grand Analog crew, it got many spins during our long stretches of prairie driving.
Listen to “Move” (produced by the late great J Dilla) > http://www. youtube. com/watch?v=CI2szueHoL8

Bill Withers – Who Is He & What Is He To You (Henrik Schwarz Remix)
Henrik Schwarz, the bad man from Germany comes through with a top notch mix yet again.. Unfortunately this one may not see the light of day due to clearance issues. Seek this one out on various DJ mixes far a wide to get a taste.

Jazzanova – Let Me Show You (Henrik Schwarz Remix)
Another Schwarz gem , showing what a remix really should be. This one is available on 12” single, released on Verve. The synths in this track are almost too deeeeeeeepppppp.

Jazzanova – Of All The Things LP
Finally the wait is over for the new album from this Berlin collective! What we get is a truly authentic blend of soul, funk, brazilian & jazz all captured painstakingly to tape. The analog really shines through, and the sonics combined with the arrangements keep things moving along very nicely. Tracks “Let Me Show Ya” (ft. Paul Randolph) , “Rockin’ You Eternally” (ft Leon Ware!) & “Gafiera” (ft Azymuth) are all top notch.

Or things that didn’t come out this year:

Venus Gang – Love To Fly
Spacy cosmic disco groove inspired by The O’Jays “for the love of money”. Good luck tracking this one down in it’s original form, but a reissue 12” was released last year so google away.

Bobby Womack – Woman’s Gotta Have It
One of my top soul tracks, with one of the most devastating bass lines I know of. Womack is in top form, pouring his heart out over a love lost and what he would have done differently.

The Family Tree – As
Heavy gospel disco cover of this Stevie Wonder classic , Julius Brockington is at the helm. The rest of the album is super solid as well.

Idris Muhammad – Could Heaven Ever Be Like This
Deep disco from the master drummer, filled with dreamy vocals, cascading harp and a relentless bass line…this track rarely leaves my record bag.

Nina Simone – Baltimore (Live Version)
Tough to track down live (from 1987!) version of this Randy Bachman tune. Keep your eyes out for a Catalist remix.. : )

Johnson, Hawkins, Tatum & Durr – You Can’t Blame Me
Some of the heaviest vocal harmonies are all over this classic soul cut , put out on the Capsoul label in the late 60s.
Released on CD by the NUMERO group, check it out!
