Intro to Music Industry

(BEGINS JUNE 2, 2008)
  • The proliferation of digital technologies creates burgeoning career and marketing opportunities within the entertainment business. Join us as we explore these possibilities and learn how the music biz works, how money is made, and how to identify the players.
  • Areas include: Understanding the Scope of the Industry (aka Where the Money Is) ** How to Identify Opportunities ** Becoming a Part of the Scene ** Your Music Is Your Business (Literally) ** Overview of the Record and Music Publishing Industry ** DIY Approaches ** and the basics of A&R, marketing, lawyers and management.
  • When: Starts Monday 6/2 from 6-9 p.m. and runs for 4 weeks
  • Where: Macomb College South Campus, Bldg. D, Rm 216
  • How much and how to register: The 4-week crash course is $119, and you can register by calling 586-498-4000, or macomb.edu/cce. The course number is (MUZK-8017 or 54293)
  • Why care?: Because you're sick of playing bars and waiting for some famous manager or label to discover you and make your dreams come true. Because you don't really know what makes this industry tick. Because you're tired of being on the outside looking in. Because there people in this town who know just enough to be dangerous and you're afraid of making a bad deal. GET EMPOWERED and GET OFF YOUR BUTT!

Copyright and Music Publishing

(BEGINS JULY 8, 2008)
  • The entire music industry all boils down to one thing -- The Song. Artists rely on income from music licensed for commercials, films and digital media. Controlling and protecting copyrights is the lifeblood of the business. Learn how to protect your assets, and the many ways your music can make you money.
  • Areas include: What Is Copyright and Why Do You Care? ** How to Register Your Music ** Copyright Myths and Legends-- And What You've Been Doing Wrong ** The Difference Between Mechanical, Master, Sample, and Synch Licenses (includes a packet of sample licenses) ** The Role of a Music Publisher ** Deciphering Alphabet Soup - PROs ASCAP, BMI AND SESAC ** How to Start Your Own Publishing Company.
  • When: Starts Tuesday 7/8 from 6-9 p.m. and runs for 4 weeks
  • Where: Macomb College South Campus, Bldg. D, Rm 216
  • How much and how to register: The 4-week intro to publishing course is $119, and you can register by calling 586-498-4000, or visiting macomb.edu/cce. The course number is (MUZK-8019 or 54292)
  • Why care?: Because someone told you they wanted to cover your song, you put up a fight, and they did it anyway. Because you had a song played on the radio in Omaha, Nebraska and have yet to see a dime. Because you equate sampling with stealing, but you think ripping music is just free promotion. Because when someone says "PRO," "mechanicals," or "synch" you glaze over. Because you write great songs and don't know what to do with them. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. Aren't you sick of being in the dark?
