Who Gives Kudos:

Friday, October 06, 2006

After 20 Days in Cuba, 13 days being followed by immigration agents, multiple times stopped by police, military interogations and countless times being told that we could never pull this off, we are finally back in the United States. Our trip was going to be for 30 days, but we had to cut it short due to the amout of 'heat' we had on us.  We do not exagerate when we tell you that the pressure we felt from the government just for being there with cameras was intense.  Doesn't that tell you they have something to hide?

Well, let us just say it feels good to be back.  We had a difficult journey, harder than we expected, yet we feel the experience itself was well worth it. As for our film, we gathered a lot of great footage as well as thousands of photos. We plan to make almost all of it available for the world to see.  For the safety of the Cuban people that we spent time with, we cannot show film with their faces for fear of their imprisonment.  The human rights issues in Cuba are a serious problem and they must be addressed.  We cannot back off of this, their government controls their very lives, from owning all the homes and cars to rashoning ridiculous amounts of food that no human can live off of. They live their lives in FEAR, fear of becoming too rich looking, fear of being caught for using a cell phone, fear of getting caught watching satellite tv (they only have five local chanels, all propaganda), fear of talking to the "wrong person" since they have informants on every corner. So, if you decide you would like to make a little extra for your family, the only way is to go against the government, even though you will be severely punished with no questions asked, no lawyers, no trial.  They do what they want and the "law" changes from day to day.

The word needs to spread, Cuba is in need of help more than ever.  It's time for change and the people know it and feel it.  Cuba will not last another 47 years. Cuba is no longer the paradise some may remember.  I'm sorry to say those who think it is, you did not make this journey with us, but you will soon learn when you see our film. We have posted some new pics, hope you enjoy them and we will keep you updated on our next steps...

Welcome back. I read all your blogs and just had to keep asking...what did you expect down there? This is what that style of governence has to offer. Venezuala isn't far behind...

But anyway, that said, what you did was extremely ballsy and my hat is off to you.

Welcome to the grim reality club.

You will now get to enjoy the satisfaction that comes with saying "Have you been there??" when someone starts talking daydreams and ideolouge espoused bullshit about a place that you have witnessed first hand.

Can't wait to see the final cuts!

For what it's worth, my two bits...

As someone who has spent a bit of time in Cuba, I find projects like yours vital in getting the word out what life is like this amazing but F*@%ed up country.  People are forced to enter illegal and illicit businesses (whether that be the black market or prostitution) in order to feed themselves and their families, and they have no voice in their government or laws.  We Americans fought our own revolution against the King of England for less that what they face on a daily basis.

That being said, I'm disappointed with the cliched portryal of Fidel on your main page that puts him on par with Hitler or Stalin.  If that were true, your red-white-&blue asses never would have been able to enter the country.  The fact that you were there doing this project is testiment to the fact that the issue of Fidel and the present Cuban situation is not so black and white.

The biggest revelation I had on my visit was not that Fidel was a repressive dictator.  It was that Americans never hear the real story of what has happened in Cuba since the revolution.  99% of the stories fall into 2 catagories: left-wing radicals who get suckered into supporting the Cuban government because of Fidel's sharp witted critique of American capitalism, or right-wing dumbnuts who cling to Cold War propoganda and erroneously portray Castro as the Devil in fatigues.  If you want to make your doc film relevant, interesting, and captivating, give us what we haven't seen, not a reguritation of what we've been hearing for decades.

As for them bugging you and putting on the heat, there is no great suprise or revelation in that.  You guys are subverting their government and supporting its over throw.  Don't you hope the FBI would be as on top of things if some filmmakers came to the U.S. to make a documentary advocating the overthrow of our government?

Tell the story guys.  Get it out there.  Just be sure you tell it like it is or I'm afraid it will just come off as more anti-Fidel retoric that only reiterates the anti-Fidel lines we've been hearing since the Cold War was in full swing almost 50 years ago.

I appreciate all that you said. It is very true. In no way is our film about Anti-Fidel or Pro-US, we are simply going to state what we saw during our time in Cuba. The oppresion of the people, the lack of information provided to them and the way the state interfere's in the lives of it's people. We want to show something new, not the same old black and white that has been done before. I thank you for you comments and interest.

Best,

Risky

I am happy to hear you are back and safe. I can't wait to see your film. I was in Cuba a few years ago and know how difficult it is for people to "survive" there. I hope your film helps open the worlds eyes.
