Ever the charitable soul, Tom Waits has donated one of his rare photos — signed, framed and truly one-of-a-kind — from his “Oil Stain” series to a charity auction that will go to benefit the tuition assistance program at Summerfield School.

More about the school: “Summerfield stands behind its deeply-rooted commitment to the children of the school, and we celebrate our economically diverse student population. Now, more than ever, Summerfield needs your support to continue this essential program.”

The online auction will close June 5, 2009. Click here for more information.

Tucson is nicer! Come on down ;-) It's cooler here too. 110 in Phoenix means 100 in Tucson, downright chilly.

Hat properly doffed yet again, maestro. The measure of a giant is his kindness toward those having trouble gauging his height. Warm prayers your way, Tom.

Not wishing to bring the wrath of the acolytes down upon me, but we are talking about a photograph for auction here. Sure - do a gig and donate any profits to the school - hey, now that would be cool. Yes, he is a genius and he is one of the most important musical influences in my life.... but that doesn't mean that I have to wait, expectantly for the crumbs to fall from the table.

A truly great artist giving back to the trade from which he draws. Thank you Mr. Waits for donating this rare pic, I'm sure it will bring in some sizable change as apposed to "Small Change". Keep the arts alive, donate, volunteer and show your art at one of your local galleries. Live near Inland Empire in SoCal? Check these guys out:

http://www.myspace.com/theriversideartexchange

a shame tom wont be able to avoid being taxed on the assumed value of the artwork he has chosen to donate....what a smokescreen 'hope and change' was

selling a picture of himself??? isn't that kind of... crazy? the whole idea of charity is so people with everything can make themselves feel better about people that don't. to sell a picture of oneself in an act of selfgratification is madness.
makes bloody good music though.

Yo - a moment of sanity amongst the sycophancy.....
Sorry, am I such a crappy fan? Have every album, have the pics on the wall, reading yet another unofficial biog at the moment.... but the best artist ever? Genius, thankfully, is shared across the generations....... the good Mr W. did not emerge, christ-like from a vacuum - even HE would acknowledge the myriad influences that coalesce to create the artist. Hey, I'm going to have to raincheck this blog..... winds me up tooooo much. Off to make some minestrone.

I just saw where the pic was for sale. I wish I had gotten to it before, I could have at least gotten bidding up higher. Went for more than 2 grand! Mr. Waits, I applaud your generosity, and I wish to death that I could have gotten the photo.
