you know, funny things can happen when you dream...i mean, when you dream in the middle of the day and right when you wake up and right before you go to bed. that's when funny things can happen - things i wouldn't have suspected when i was 8 years old and had dreams about life and what i would be when i grew up. back then, i dreamt in words and in boredom, in class and in church, in pictures and in stories, in cars and in to-do lists (yes, even at age 8), at the dinner table and at recess. but i've slowly caught on to the truth about dreams: dreams can get in the way of the practical stuff of life. dreams can really mess up plans in the middle of a regular run-of-the-mill kind of week. dreams can confuse things that shouldn't be confusing. dreams can keep you up at night and catch you off-guard in the middle of singing along to what's on the radio. dreams can add to doubt, create moments of hopelessness and inspire seasons of restlessness...and there's nothing appealing about any of that. so why do we dream? because it makes sense? not really. because it's our ticket to happiness? i wish. because it's what we're supposed to do? maybe. because it's what keeps us awake and what keeps us from falling into the patterns of life that don't matter. a lot about life matters, and it's dreaming that keeps us awake to that stuff, i think. i think, but i don't really know.
