description
I'm basically trying to explain that it's not okay to laugh at TS. Like I said in the video, I am not able to speak for everyone, but atleast 754 across the nation, not even including the people who have not signed as of yet.

Awesome Jamie! (as usual) I couldn't agree with you more. I also have experienced people making fun of individuals with Autism. It is hard to hear and see. What we can do as advocates, is educate as many people as possible, and you do such an amazing job at that!! I have learned a lot more about Tourette Syndrome from you! Keep up the great work, I am behind you~

totally awesome topic!
but btw, u shuld get a stand 4 ur camera, or set it on sumthing. its kinda really shaky.

ok, first of all, where the hell is the petition, ill give u another signature!

y'know, this is the first time i culd tell u were passionate about awareness of tourettes.

and its, kind of ironic u post this now, cuz, just last thursday. there was this guy in my writing1 class that said he loved the tourettes guy. as much as i did get pissed off, i didnt say anything. i dont think anybody in that class even knew i had tourettes. but in my head, wen he said it was funny, i told him "ya, well, why dont you go find yourself a mental disorder and then somebody who exploits it and see how funny you think they are!"

but [beyond awesome] video! hope u dont mind if it goes on my profile, or i promote the hell out of it.

Very nice video, with points well taken!

I don't think it's always, *always* so really terrible to laugh at THE DISORDER, which -- let's face it -- is sometimes really ridiculous, and all you CAN do sometimes is just laugh. But that's mostly in cases of us people with TS who know how to laugh at the disorder, but not at the person.

It it most certainly always wrong to laugh at THE PERSON with the disorder -- *especially* if it's a child. Kids with TS have to go through so much bullying and feeling left out and other misery, the last thing they need is to have someone laughing at them for something they have no control over.

I would try to plead with those who have Tourette's to try to not get too angry automatically every time someone laughs at the TS (as opposed to the person who has it). It is imperative that we show that we are able to have a sense of humor about it, and not seem that we're going around with chips on our shoulder about it. There are already too many angry people in the world like that!

Peace out indeed!

heyy colin. it's totally different if your with a few friends, you tic, you laugh, theyy laugh, ha. thing is you never know when someone will think it's funny or not, and you should never laugh if someone is hurt and they're not truly willing to laugh it off themselves. having said this, you never know if someone will laugh or not ,and since laughing at pain is not normally funny, it's best not to laugh.

I agree with Colin. We have to be able to show we have a sense of humor, or everyone will think we're just mad all the time. And Colin should know -- he has a GREAT sense of humor!

But Jamie-Grace, you're right too on one important point: When in doubt, don't laugh. It's just common sense and common courtesy.

One kudos for Colin, one for Jamie-Grace. :)

Hey I do agree with you and Colin. But people just need to understand the difference between a mockery and "laughing something off". too often the two are mixed up and since it's so mixed up now this topic has to be dealt with seriously.

Okay girlfriend, you are the CUTEST THING EVER. I love how you just come straight from your heart. I know how being ridiculed feels and it is NOT funny.

I've had some issues with my page being violated by "Phishers"... so to reply to your message, yes! It is a Martin and her name is Tigger. :)

I once went to a comedy club and the comedian turned his head in my direction and stopped in the middle of his skit and said "What"? (dead silence)... "Oh, sorry, someone must have Tourette Syndrome" and everyone laughed. I did not. I felt like I had been punched in the stomache. I had not made a sound, and it was clear that it was a "joke" and part of his "skit"... but I was not happy. I felt like going up to him after the show and said "You know, I have Tourettes and that was far from funny" but the jerk I was dating talked me out of it. Needless to say, I'm not dating him anymore!

exactly. it offends me that when i went on this [myspace] and typed in tourettes in the myspace category to see what there was out there to get ppl informed or ppl that have it so i could feel like im not the only one, and all i mostly found was videos like, [a persons name] with tourettes, and its just a pointless video thats only like 15 seconds long with a girl standing there doing twitching and noises and laughing, when she doesnt realize how lucky she is that she doesnt have to twitch and twitch and to where it hurts and u get sore, and twitch some more, and cant stop, and if any other person tried they wouldnt last 2 minutes, but we have to keep going and cannot stop or get a break so it never hurts. we do the impossible by twitching even further than we can even do it. sometimes when my twitches get real bad i wish i could leave my body, and ppl never thought that a person could think of suicide not because of their life situation [which tourettes ppl still do have bcuz how much it sucks to have it] but because they just want to end the torture that is going on that they cannot stop.

now i know a reason why good ppl laugh at tics sometimes. i kno great caring ppl that laugh or chuckle at my tourettes sometimes, but always apologize and let me kno they arent laughing at me. and i understand, because its human instict and nature, when funny noises are made ppl laugh. when ppl with out tourettes [and arent trying to mock it] are just being hyper and goofy and being weird, ppl laugh. i have a firend that makes this weird squirrel sonding noise [has nothing to do with tourettes] to b goofy and it always gets ppl laughing, even if they dont think its funny. random goofy noises just trigger helpless laughter. i kno because i see polite ppl try to hold it in all the time. but i tell them i understand, and i might chuckle too if i were them and wouldnt mean to. and thats who my closest friends are, we can all laugh about it, since its not mean in any way and theyre not laughing AT me. and my friend geoff told me b4, he tries not to laugh, but he jokes around with me about it and cracks jokes that i even laugh at, because he cares and wants me to feel normal when i dont. and thats what i like. and i do have to laugh about my tics sometimes to overcome how depressed it makes me, and find a brighter side to it, but i dont make a mockery of it and i hate when ppl do. i even did a comedy stand up about my tourettes and stuff i do, but in a non hurtful, optimistic way of looking at tourettes in my life, instead of letting it get me down. it was actual situations i had with my tics. and after the comedy thing i did a guy came up to me and said i helped him out and made him feel good and not depressed because his son just got diagnosed with tourettes, and i helped make it look less terrible, and i inspired him. u can look at the comedy thing. url up. just cut and paste in the url box and it will take u to the page.

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=15348587

but theres a difference between me having an open mind and knowing ppl cant help laughing at certain things but try not to, and ppl exploiting and laghing and mocking because they dont understand how much it sucks. like when im in class, my friends will laugh when i have a tic but nicely and say something o brighten my mood and let me know that theyre not being mean. like when i have a tic where i shout something like, "shut yo mouth!!" [i have tourettes where i shout phrases also] my friends will b like, "yea tell em chris, this class is gettin too loud." but not laugh at me about it, they try to make the phrase seem normal. and ill laugh at what tey said, like, "yea, thats prolly why my tics are gettin worse." but when ppl will sit there and make tourette sounds, or mock hwat i say, or EVEN try to trigger my repetitive or resposive tics like saying something over and over again, so i repeat it, that is what makes me mad. because they are making a mockery of me, and then teachers think that im faking my tics to get attention bcuz erryone responds. why would i WANT to b made to look like a fool. i could go on 4ever but ill stop.

hey jaime.

I watched your video. You have TS a lot worse than I.

I've been through hell with others when i was in grade school. I'm not going to even get into that.

The world is going to make a mockery of everyone. Don't feel so bad about it. I know you and a lot of people with TS hurt. I've hurt. It DOES hurt.

just imagine

you wake up and go to school. and over the coarse of the day 10 people said very nice things to you. things that made you feel really good.

but that one person, that you have had bouts with, that bully, or that mean teacher, or whoever it might be says 1 thing negative or mean to you.

what do you think about for the rest of the day? Those 10 nice things or that 1 bad thing?

People have a way of droning on bad experiences. You need to focus on the good things you have. I mean your a very pretty girl, and you seem very intelligent. Be happy God gave you those things and let the rest of the non sense go.

Your fighting a war your just not going to win. 800 people- out of 6.6 billion. and 99.9% of those people will NEVER care. its just human nature.

so take care and keep your head up. Life throws some pretty tough stuff at ya some times. but what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.

God Bless.

Hm. I do agree with this video. It's the mockery type of laughter that's not cool. However, my family, friends, and I joke around with my TS from time to time. Sometimes it's just a small joke, other times it's an elaborate joke with more ideas coming to mind.

I have noticed though the only time people every really "mocked" at my TS was back when I was in high school. I have yet to see real adult mature people laugh AT me. Mainly people ask me if I'm "okay". I guess they think I'm having seizures or something else. But I just tell them I'm fine and then I debate from there on whether or not I should say "I just have tourettes, no big deal".

I can understand people laughing a little bit from ignorance, it doesn't bother me. If I was them and was uneducated about the subject...I would probably chuckle a little bit too. We're only human.

I also assume you're referring to the Tourettes Guy videos in your speech. Well, I personally found those funny. Yea it was over the top, but the point of his videos was to entertain, not to insult. The people who ran the website also stated that he did have TS but he was over exaggerating it. They even gave a link or two for people who wanted to really educate themselves about TS.
