Vasili quits SBS and returns to C31
Cult gardener Vasili is leaving SBS less than 12 months after joining it to return to Channel 31, where he began.
A spokeswoman confirmed Vasili's Garden will no longer screen on SBS, with the network unable to come to a comfortable arrangement with producers. Vasili is understood to be unhappy about SBS's desire to beef up the show with slick production values.
"Everyone has something in the show they enjoy; some like the music, some like the culture, some like the food, some like the gardening, but they all come back and say it's down to earth, it reminds me of my next-door neighbour, it's like the movies we make at home," he told The Age.
"Tell the networks that. They think it needs to be glamorised and stylised and polished. People call our show a real show. It's a people show. It's not a mocked-up show. It's not pre-produced where we know the punchlines before they're even said."
It is an unfortunate start to 2008 for SBS, still smarting over a troubled 2007 and the loss of Mary Kostakidis.
Repeats of Vasili's Garden screen on Channel 31 on weeknights at 6.30pm. New episodes start on February 6 at 7.30pm.
