Current mood:  nervous

Haunted Cemeteries are a common haunting ground for ghosts. Connecticut is amoung one of the most haunted states in the united states as we are part of the original 13 colonies, and so are many of it's graveyards. Here In the Consititution state the women rule...One is of a "White Lady" who has been haunting one old cemetery for 60 yrs. The other is a "Green Lady" who met her demise in a swamp, Along with the wicked witch of Monroe, and a very famous Midnight Mary of New Haven. There bodies may or may not be burried, but burried not in "spirit".  You can see under my pic's for some pictures of graves, and these places.

 Evergreen Cemetery:

THE STORY: New Haven, CT. The haunting of "MIDNIGHT MARY" New Haven's most famous ghost, of Mary E. Hart. Some say she was a wicked witch, some say she was murdered by her husband, other's say her forelorn soul haunts the cemetery where she is buried. For those of you who do not know her tale of woe here goes: Mary Hart was a local New Haven woman, who lived on Winthrop Ave, in the 1800's. One day she collapsed from a deathlike "spell". Her husband believed she was dead, and called the family to arrange the burial. Mary was buried in Evergreen Cemetery without hesitation. That night, her aunt/sister (depending on who is telling the story) had a horrible nightmare that Mary had been buried alive. The nightmare was so disturbing, that her aunt/sister demanded the next morning that her casket be opened. When the care taker opened the grave, Mary was inside, but her family viewed a horrific sight. Mary was all twisted up, with a white stained look of terror upon her face. Her fingers were bloody, and there were stratches on the interior of her coffin. Mary had been buried alive!! And apparently she tried to claw her way out, it is said that she suffercated right before, or around midnight that loathsome night. After the awful incident, the family in all there embarrasment, re-buried her and errected a large pink granite headstone over her grave. No one knows to this day what the strange inscription means. In large black letters it reads: "The people shall be troubled at midnight and pass away!" Is it a witches curse? A spirtual warning from Mary? Underneith the impending "curse" the words discribe how Mary died. There have been stories of people who have dared to venture out to her grave at midnight. Stories of those being haunted by Mary, Scared to death, Impaled on the Iron gates, tales of ill fortune and accidents, and people who have disappeared without a trace. Maybe people should take Mary's warning more seriously. Somethings are better left alone.

Seen and Heard: Mary's ghost has been seen inside and outside of the cemetery on numerous occasions. One man in the area claims that he saw her standing in the cemetery and thought that it was a trespasser so he called the police. When the police went in to investigate she was gone...Ghostly images of a horse drawn carriage have appeared in the cemetery from time to time in the past, but no origin of this phantom carriage have been yet discovered. Others claim that Mary has been seen walking along the road of the cemetery hitching rides, to her old home on Winthrop Ave. Folks who have gone in the cemetery after midnight, and brave ones that have gone to Mary's grave had said to have suffered inflictions of the curse. Ex:(getting into car accidents, people being impaled on the iron gates surround the cemetery, people gone missing, or being scared to death (by the ghost of Mary) even one college student apparently fell down a flight of stairs after visiting the cemetery and broke both legs...Remember: I can't validate these stories of others I can just report them I can tell you that no murders were credited to the cemetery, no one was ever impaled on the iron gates or otherwise.

My Personal Account: Evergreen Cemetery is a beautiful peaceful well kept cemetery with many old graves and even a large section of spanish war soldiers. The credit of it's fame goes strictly to Mary. I have visited durning the day, and taken many pictures of her grave (soon to be posted), but while I was there I can't say anything ghostly happened. I will be returning once I have the OK by the proper people to conduct a night time investigation.

UNION CEMETERY: The Ghost of "The White Lady"

THE STORY: In the sleepy town of EASTON, CT there is by far the most haunted cemetery in possibly the entire united states. Listed amoung every haunted connecticut website, and researched by almost every paranormal group including THE WARRENS, the ghost of the White Lady is the most popular ghost. The Warrens wrote a book called "GRAVEYARD" dedicated to her whole exsistance. They also photographed and videoed her. She is sometimes seen in the cemetery, walking amoung the rows with a white glow surrounding her. She has dark hair, and wears a nightgown like dress, with a bonnet on her head. She is sometimes surrounded by dark figures that appear to be yelling at her, and trying to hurt her. Ed Warren believed she was the ghost of a woman, whose husband was murdered by devious thugs. He thought the White Lady was murdered by the same people who killed her husband. Bodies had been discovered beside the cemetery, by the old baptist church in a sink hole on Church Rd from many years ago. Another was murdered there and had her body dumped in the sink hole near the church by her adulterous lover.

Another more terrifing story is that of REDEYES- ( A man who committed suicide by using dynamite ), a evil spirit who peers from the brush around the gothic looking burial ground. Reports of people being chased by this evil enitity. There are stories of tragedies that have occured around the cemetery. There were two girls killed in a car accident right in front of the cemetery, and the terrible demonic possession of an 11-year-old boy. The woman who tried to stab her husband in the middle of the night for no apparent reason. All reflect the curious influence of the cemetery what is recognized as an aura of disaster certainly this cemetery has that aura, particularly when you look into its background. The graves inside of Union date back to the 1600's, due to vandalism and trespassers the cemetery is off limits from dusk til dawn. It is heavely guarded by Easton police, and there are criminal charges involved if you dare to go there.

SEEN AND HEARD: Apparitions of the white lady have appeared to dozens of people including firefighters and police. The most famous is of a firefighter who claimed to have "hit" the White Lady with his car. Redeyes the other forlorn spirit has peered his eyes out from bushes, and chased people.

MY PERSONAL ACCOUNTS: I visited the cemetery in 2001 with a friend, and a video recorder. We were at the cemetery for about 10 minutes before Easton police showed up. We were ticketed and fined for trespassing and we didn't even get out of the car! (Word of advice DO NOT GO THERE, DONT EVEN BOTHER) The 6 minutes of film we got was actually worth it though. We got a strange anomolie of  fuzz and a white streak across the graveyard, but while we were taping the camera battery died (it had a fully charged battery mind you) If only we had a little more time we may have caught more on film. Easton is a scary scary place, much like a stephen king movie...This is a closed investigation for now, because it is forbidden to go there.

Stepney Cemetery: Beardsley Plain

THE STORY:The sister cemetery to UNION, the burial ground is said to be the second home to THE WHITE LADY. She can be seen walking up PEPPER STREET that runs along the cemetery. Many pictures have been taken here, with ghostly mists appearing on the photo's. The creepiest headstone by far is one of a man named "Tingly". Accidents have occurred along side the cemetery, where people have claimed they have "Hit" a woman. When the driver gets out of there car to investigate the accident, there is no one there.

Seen and Heard: The white lady has been seen walking on the road beside the cemetery.

My Personal Accounts: I finially found it! off ex 46 on the merrit.

GUNNTOWN CEMETERY:

THE STORY In Naugatuck CT, on Gunntown Rd there lies a small old cemetery surrounded by stone walls. Gunntown is a place of many supernatural events, and ghostly sightings. Many photographs have been taken here through the years. Also investigated by the WARRENS, they dubed the land haunted, and felt some evil presence there. A connecticut paranormal group recorded the voice of a man saying: "Go, go now!!" along with a photo of an evil looking face in a mist. Another EVP recording indicated the voice of a small girl saying "We are all alone". There are many tomb stones inside that have the apparent family name "GUNN" there is at least one discovered story about old naugatuck: and it can be read on the website www.skaneateles.org.  Amoung other graves, there are numerous ones of children, some were only infants. No one truly knows the orgin of the spectors/spirits that have appeared through the years, we can only look to the past for our anwsers which have yet to be uncovered.

Seen and Heard: Reports of hearing childrens laughter, footsteps, and old ragtime music from inside the cemetery. Apparations of a man on horse back carring a lantern trotting around inside the burial ground, the ghost of a boy, numerous figures of black dogs, and other dark figures have been seen (I have seen myself @night there).  Orbs of every color can be seen by eye floating around.

My personal accounts: Gunntown is one of my favorite cemeteries. I have been there numerous times with varied results. In some photographs I have taken durning the day I had some anomolies show up on film, and  with the night time visits. While there visiting one time, I felt a very dark presence, and then some gentler presences. I distinclty heard footsteps running around the cemetery, and swear I was being watched and followed. There are numerous graves of children here, and amoung the graves there are old teddy bears, and toys (possibly left by other visitors as gifts for the ghosts?)  I will be going back to Guntown so check back frequently for updates and new pics...

Great Hill Cemetery:AKA HOOKMANS CEMETERY

THE STORY In Seymour ct, Great Hill Cemetery  on Cemetery Road...The graveyard is said to be haunted. Some of you may have heard the tale in urban legend. The crazed stalker, with a hook for a hand seeking out teenagers and couples making out in a parked car. The legend of Great Hill Cemetery is an extensive one, with at least 3 different stories surrounding it. The first story is of a man by the name of "HOOKMAN" who was hung in the cemetery from a great big tree for a crime he did not commit in the 1800's. They say he's angry ghost haunts the cemetery, looking for the people who hung him. The second story is of a care taker of the cemetery in the early days who had a hook for a hand. People and stories say he was a hermit type and did not take kindly to visitors in his cemetery after hours. People will go as far to say he would murder trespassers, and dig them a fresh grave burying the evidence of his crime.

The last story is of an escape murderer/convict who also had a hook for a hand. He hid out in the cemetery, and woods surrounding. Supposivly he would happen upon young couples who were making out in there cars. The most famous story, is that of one that is common in urban legends. A couple is kissing in there car, and they hear a scratching noise on there door. When the girl panic's and asks the boy to leave, he brings her home. When he goes to let her out of the car, there is an old rusted hook hanging on the door. This story can be associated with any of the above stories, and ususally is depending on who tells it. Through the years tales of the cemetery being haunted have inspired many to go out there and nose around. Some of the graves have been vandalized, and it's quiet dangerous to walk around out there in the dark. People have reported seeing dark figures lingering about the graves, cold spots, whispering, footsteps, and an evil presence can be felt all around it. Some say even if you drive by, your car can stall. It is then you will hear the scratching of a hook upon your door.

The Mythical  Stories attached to GREAT HILL CEMETERY AKA HOOKMANS cemetery cannot be vouched for by any articles or actual  facts. I am planning my next investigation here, first in the daylight, then at night. We'll see what develops...STAY TUNED!

Seen and Heard: Reports of strange shadows moving about the graves, strange noises, orbs, uneasy feelings and feelings of being watched.

My Personal Accounts: I recently investigated this cemetery at night with my group. We found the road that is actually not on "cemetery rd" but an unmarked road off of "Great Hill Rd". The cemetery is surrounded by thick woods, and half of it is up on a hill. The other half of the cemetery is on the ground level of the road. The graves are very old, and some are badly vandalized. We parked our car and just sat observing the cemetery itself. We all had a very creepy, hairs standing up kinda feeling. We saw colored orbs floating around, and one group member spotted a moving figure briefly only to see it disappear quickly. We heard strange scowling and screeching noises (possibly and animal?) Never the less- Unease, and fear spread about the group. One group member refused to get out of the car because he was consumed by dread, and anxiety. We decided that we would return another time. At this time I cannot make a valid report. This place is soooooo creepy at night, Its unexplainable.

Four Corners Cemetery: Grave of "Hanna Cranna"- THE MONROE WITCH- Monroe/Trumbull has its credit of haunted status due to it's famous or imfamous UNION cemetery and ghostly White Lady, But what you may or may not know is a tale of the town's legendary witch. Her name was Hanna Cranna, and she is buried and said to be haunting Gregory's Four Corners Cemetery in Monroe, CT. Hanna Cranna was the wife of Capt. Joseph Hovey, it wasn't til her husband set off for a walk one day, and didn't return that the rumors of her being a witch took effect. Her husband was said to walk right off a cliff because he was under some sort of trance. Towns folk, blamed Hanna for the unfortunate death of the Capt. They said Hanna put a spell on him, and caused his death. After he died, Hanna's behavior changed. She decided that if the towns people were calling her a witch, she would become one.

Hanna would demand money, food, clothing, tools and any other merchandise that was avaliable. The towns people of early monroe would gladly oblige her wishes, for fear that the "witch" would curse them. Some people though, would boldly turn Hanna down, and when they did the consequences were unfortunate. Legend has it that Hanna cursed a woman who refused to give up a pie she baked specially for her husband. Hanna mumbled words at her, and the woman could never bake properly again. The same is for a fisherman, that would not give up his days catch, for it was only to feed himself. Hanna cursed him, and he never caught another fish again. Others would go to the witch for advice, some farmers would ask her to make it rain when there was drought, for a small price Hanna would mumble some words and the rain would come. Many speculated that Hanna had direct contact with the devil himself. Legend has it, she used to sit on a rock on Cutlers Farm Rd, that is said to be imprinted with the devils hoof. When Hanna 's pet rooster (some say was her familiar) died, she predicted that death was coming to her soon, and some say she knew the exact day she would die. She asked some neiboors at a near by farm to carry out her burial wishes. Hanna simply requested that when she died that she be carried in her casket by pall bearers across the town and buried in the old cemetery. Hanna died excatly when she said she would, but the day she did there was a terrible snow storm. The pall bearers were unable to carry the woman, so they loaded her on a wagon. When the set off to the cemetery, her casket began shaking and rattling, it even fell from the wagon several times. The men were so freaked out, they finially carried her, the way she desired by foot to the cemetery and buried her.

They mysterious thing is that on Hanna's Tomb stone that dates of her death are uncertain for some reason. It reads: HANNAH CRANNA, 1783-1859-60 WIFE OF CAPTAIN JOSEPH HOVEY. Why there is uncertainty no one knows, some speculate that she was not dead and buried alive. Some say she came back from the grave because she was so angry,at the towns people and that didn't carry out her burial wishes. Either way even today they say Hanna's wickedly cleaver spirit is still haunting the cemetery, and parts of monroe...so they say anyway

Seen and Heard: People claim that they have seen the ghost of Hanna walking along the street by her grave. Others claim hitting her apparition with there car, driving right through her just like "The white lady". Others have seen shadows amoung her grave, that disappear quickly when someone approaches. You are supposted to bring her something when you visit her grave, or else you'll suffer some ill forture-(so the legend says). On numerous occasions people have hit her grave stone with there cars, in an effort to avoid hitting her appartion.

My Personal Account: I need directions to this location.

GREEN LADY CEMETERY:

THE STORY: In the sleepy town of Burlington, CT Resides another famous ghost, Elisabeth Paltimer or aka The Green Lady. The legend of the green lady goes back to 1800. Elisabeth and her Husband Benjamin lived near swamp lands, by the cemetery. One winter, Benjamin went off for food and supplies leaving Elisabeth home. While he was gone a blizzard started, so he had to remain in town and wait for it to pass. Elisabeth be came so worried about her husband not returning, she set out to find him. Apparently she fell through an icy patch in the swamp and drown/froze. Another version of the story says that she was drowning and her husband wouldn't or couldn't save her, or that he murdered her. (The murder story is a bit more popular than the drowning story)

Seen and Heard: The ghost of Elisabeth appears in a green mist walking down the dirt road of the cemetery, she smiles and heads for her grave then disappears. People have been seeing the green lady for close to 35 years in the area. Other reports of voices in the woods, rustling, lights (of that like a lantern) have been seen down the road near the cemetery (Could it be Benjamin lookin for Elisabeth by lantern light?) Errie feelings of being watched, and followed. Photo graphs taken to reveal strange greenish/yellowish mists and glows around her grave, and the cemetery itself. There is a tree in the cemetery that resembles a figure of women. Some believe that it is the Green Lady and that she possessed the tree, in her image.

My Personal Account: Chilling Account COMING SOON!!!!

Grove Street Cemetery:  Putnum, CT

THE ROATING BALL- In Putnum's Grove Street Cemetery, there is a strange occurance over The Houghton family burial plot. The structure is a 6 foot granite pillar with a large 4,000 lb granite ball that seems to be rotating! The strange thing about the ball is that between the years 1930-1970 the ball has turned an amazing 2 feet by itself. It is estimated that the ball weights 2 tons, and though it has been investigated scientifically, no one knows exactly why the ball moves. A ball that size and weight should be held down firmly by gravity. Many theories have come along since the movement was discovered. Scientists say it seems to move clockwise. Some of the theories on the table are:

1. Expansion from the heat of the hot sun, could be making it move 2. Water could be trickling under, and then freezing in the winter, thus making it slide. 3. The earths magnetic field could be pulling on the ball, or 4. Natural vibrations such as earth tremors could be making the movement. However no scientic proof has ever been found as to why this huge stone ball would be moving. With the science aside, could it very well be supernatural?
