The demi- part clues you up that this is a lesser version of something (as in demitasse, demimonde, etc.). If the -urge leaves you scratching your head, think Greek: ergos, "work." But still no cigar. A demiurge is a subordinate deity responsible for fashioning material things. Who couldn't use a few of those?..
