khanateIf you think outside the box on this one -- the box being a single ancestor language -- you can probably guess its meaning: a khanate is the realm or office of one of various Asian rulers known as a khan. The Latin-derived -ate bit in fact gets tacked onto words from all sorts of languages and is similarly used in cardinalate, caliphate, consulate, episcopate, and rabbinate, to name a few.
InfoI don't know if you've heard of Nathan Bransford. He's a literary agent with the Curtis Brown, LTD agency. I subscribe to his blog via email and get a daily post. I find him very informative and he keeps you up to date on what's happening in the world of publish. Of course, I like his sense of humor.

http://blog.nathanbransford.com/Humor A married man was having an affair with his secretary. One day they went to her place and made love all afternoon. Exhausted, they fell asleep and woke up at 8 PM. The man hurriedly dressed and told his lover to take his shoes outside and rub them in the grass and dirt.
He put on his shoes and drove home.
'Where have you been?' his wife demanded.
'I can't lie to you,' he replied, 'I'm having an affair with my ecretary. We had sex all afternoon.'
She looked down at his shoes and said: 'You lying bastard! You've been playing golf!'
