What does unplugged really mean, anyway? As T has pointed out, it's unlikely that we'll be wandering through the crowd this Saturday at Piecora's like a mariachi band with our instruments strapped to our chests. It won't be like those house concerts where the audience is spread around the basement on batik pillows and beanbags, the singer in one corner holding forth with a guitar. No, unplugged probably means a show where a sound tech's running a small mixing board, with some mics and DI boxes on stage. The question then becomes: which instruments, and why? There's no doubt that the overdrive and feedback will stay in the garage, but that still leaves a lot open to discussion. Does the drummer bring a modified kit, or just use hand percussion? If he brings a kit, he'll probably use brushes -- but are split sticks OK? Does the bass go DI or does he drag an amp down to the club? Do I play my Guild with the better tone through a mic, or use my smaller Alvarez because it has a pickup? The lead will still be "electric," but what tones will sound appropriate? These are the questions that plague us as we head into Saturday's debut of Sugarcane Mutiny Unplugged, at Piecora's on Capitol Hill with our dear friends the Starlings!
