Current mood: vibrant
Hey Peoples,
It's been awhile...But I'm not gonna lie : Facebook is the new myspace ! Plus there is too many crazy peoples over here...Anyway, last month I was in NYC to make a special issue about Queens rappers.
Even tho a lot of people discouraged me I thought that this could be interesting. A borough with so much variety (For instance Fifty and Pharaohe Monch are both from Southside Jamaica Queens) and classic acts (from Run DMC, to LL, Tribe, Nas...) deserve an in-depth coverage.
Besides that, NY is supposed to be my "home" in the US. I've been there many times for holidays, I've got aunties and cousins, I know (= "we exchange mails" ) some efficient PR's and some excellent journalists... BUT I never been in NY for work purpose and as I 'll found out later there is a huge difference.
Even if ATL is the new Mecca of hip-hop, the industry of rap music is still a New york thing. All the majors and the "hip-hop medias" are concentrated there. Tha's why my speech ("Hi I'm writer for a french hip-hop magazine...") in NY was only agreed by a long stare that meant "And ?" LOL Even the brokest, unknown MC in NY is media and business savy and 'll harass you with questions before an interview ! The "others" after asking crazy things (like getting 500$ for an intw or to get the cover of the magazine...) just made me lost my time and sometimes my temper.
After 2 days of pure insanity I decided to just take everything. I finally managed to get Maino, Whoo Kid, Peter Rosenberg from Hot 97, DJ Envy, Kidz In The Hall, Marco Polo & Torae... I also had the chance to hang out with Big Noyd the whole evening and listened to his crazy Mobb deep and Queensbridge memories...So the magzine still looks good.
I'm not bitter at all, that's part of the game, but now I know that next time to get a piece of that damn Big Apple, I'll have to sharpen my teeth!
Peace,
S.
