The myth that we used "orange cans" to roll our hair to achieve those cool surfer bangs is just that: A MYTH. I, nor none of my friends--who all lived in southern California and actually surfed--ever thought of doing so. We went to our local stylist--who used what was called a "pie" cut--shaped our sundrenched locks so they would flip back without the use of rollers or curlers. We only used curlers to add Body to the flip.

Recently, my friend Jessica (a stylist for more years than she would like to admit)--and one of the lead stylists at a local spa here in Las Vegas--has amazingly given me back my 1970's surfer bangs--with a twist. The style is so utterly cool that 16 year old girls admire my style.

1970's surfer bangs is all in the style, baby--not in orange juice cans.

Can you dig it?

Hmmm. I didn't use the juice cans to get surfer bangs, but I did roll my hair in juice cans. I tried EVERYthing to get ANY kind of a curl or wave or anything!! My hair was bone straight. For my senior pictures, which in 1972 our school did AT school in a half hour time period, no big ol' cool backgrounds like the kids now get, anyhow. For my senior pictures you can actually tell from pose one to pose two, that my hair wouldn't keep any kind of curl. It was flipped sort of in pose one and staight as an arrow in pose two. But oh yea. This chick did try those orange juice cans. LOL We probably heard it was all the rage in southern California or something! Ha! Hope you're having a great summer.

WE NEVER did that in California. That is why you could not get those lovely waves. It was actually a cut, not a curl. Even with bone straight hair, with right cut you could have those "waves".
