Ok, so here it is, for anyone who hasn't heard the story yet. I've lost my voice from telling it, so I might as well just write it down. About 2 months ago, as I was unlocking the door to the bar, a white van screeched to a halt in the middle of Passyunk Ave. An old man with white hair, cotton in one ear, and bottle-bottom-thick glasses jumped out and proceeded to start shouting at me from the street. In 2 years of business I had never seen this guy before, so this came as a complete surprise. He carried on about how neither I nor my patrons were allowed to park in the school lot on Carpenter St. and that he knew for certain I was selling 6-packs to people who were drinking them in the lot. When I pointed out that I had a letter from the school principal saying anyone could park in the lot after 6pm and asked how he knew that it was MY patrons drinking MY beer in the lot, his response was to shout at me that he used to be a City Committeeman and he was going to call L&I (Licenses and Inspections) and get me shut down. After this bewildering exchange he jumped back into his van and drove off. I didn't hear anything for a month, and then he apparently called a meeting with some of the neighbors on Carpenter St. as well as the school principal. Of course, I was not told about the meeting until afterwards, but the gist of it was the same as his rant to me. From what I understand, the other neighbors had no problems with me (most of them are regulars), and the principal told him that either he could close the lot at night or it was open to anyone. Furthermore, he told our friendly neighbor that he (the principal) was not aware of any problems in the lot. Whether the asshole had already started trying to use his connections to get me in trouble or whether the meeting not going his way was the last straw, I do not know. (I have a friend that works for the city who told me point blank that there's no way L&I would ever have shown up on my doorstep from one guy complaining unless there were political strings being pulled - gotta love Philly!) Fast forward to last Wednesday, when, on my day off, as I'm about to go out to eat with friends, I get a call from Ryan that L&I is at the bar, and I need to get my ass down there ASAP. When I pull up there are 3 cop cars, 2 L&I vans, 4 armed, uniformed police officers, and 5 L&I inspectors. For my little bar. Now remember that the building is 80 years old, so of course not all of the wiring is up to current code. Furthermore, there had never been any kind of fire alarm system in the building until I bought it, but apparently the guy I had do the job 2 years ago put in a system that works just fine but is also not completely up to code. As if that wasn't aggravating enough, while the building is zoned 100% commercial, and my liquor license applies to all 3 floors (both of which I made sure of before opening), according to the city, I need to have what's called a Use Permit for each floor. (It would have been great if my lawyer had told me this when I told him that I was planning to open the whole building up.) So while the state says it's fine for me to serve alcohol throughout, according to the city, only the first floor is allowed to be a bar. For now. Did I mention that I love Philly? So, thanks to one douchebag with a few connections, I'm now spending $33k, (yes, thirty three thousand dollars) to rewire almost the entire building, and I'm out almost ten grand in legal fees, not to mention being closed for 2 days downstairs and as long as 2 months upstairs. Thank god my lawyer is earning those fees, because without his legal wrangling, I was supposed to have been completely shut down for 2 weeks. The end of the story? My best revenge is to be open and stay open. All I ask of my loyal patrons is their continued support and business. Oh, and I'm collecting exciting rumors. In the 48 hours we were closed, I heard that the building was condemned, I was in jail, the bar had no liquor license, and that Ryan had killed himself on the second floor. Feel free to let me know if you've heard anything equally juicy! I promise that the pool room and DJs will return soon; just be patient and keep coming out to drink! Thanks to everyone...
