Hey everyone!
AC wants to know your stand on a controversial issue!
According to clarionledger.com, Mandi Jackson, a student at Pearl High School in Pearl, MS, and her family are suing the school district after her cheer coach read an email exchange between Jackson and another student containing profanity via her Facebook account. The incident happened almost two years ago, but Jackson hasn't been allowed to cheer since and has been ostracized by some other students at school.
According to the article, Jackson's coach asked the squad to give her their usernames and passwords to their Facebook accounts. After her coach read the emails, Jackson was no longer able to cheer.
Jackson's parents feel the coach shared the emails with others, and they're alleging the school district violated their daughter's rights to free speech, due process and privacy by reading the emails. They're also saying the district is guilty of defamation of character and cruel and unusual punishment by removing her from the cheer team.
Do you think Mandi deserved to be removed from the squad because she used profanity in emails sent to another student? Or do you think her privacy was violated, and it shouldn't have resulted in her being kicked off the squad? Was her punishment too severe? Should your cheer coach or other adults other than your parents have the right to access things like your Facebook accounts?
Let us know what you think! Shoot me an email stating your opinion on the topic, and you could see it published in an upcoming issue of AC! Send the email with "Privacy Issues" in the subject line to khager@americancheerleader.com.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts!
Cheers :)
