The Jazz Icons series has released some truly amazing DVD's recently, and I for one am utterly thrilled. We've long had access to a wealth of recorded (as in audio only) material from the greatest jazz musicians, but little to no actual video footage of artists like Coltrane, Brubeck, Montgomery, etc...
Well, no longer. These DVD's are mindblowing in the video and audio quality as well as their educational importance. We can finally watch the inimitable Wes Montgomery blaze his way through songs like 'Four On Six' and 'Impressions,' with Pat Metheny as our guide through detailed liner notes and song analysis. Seeing John Coltrane laying sheets of sound up close and personal, Sarah Vaughan's warmth and vocal mastery in person... good, good stuff.
Anyway, these are fantastic DVD's. Jazz freaks take note.
