Current mood:  accomplished

Anyone out there have food allergies? I never have until now. I've started developing what I believe to be an allergy to milk and/or dairy. I've been lactose intolerant for a number of years now, but through avoidance and minimizing the amount of dairy I eat/drink I've been able to live a completely normal life. But now it seems as though my body is moving beyond simple intolerance and I'm actually becoming allergic to milk/dairy.

Rewind to last summer. My daughter is 2 months old. I start getting a stomach ache every day after eating. At this point in my life cheese plays a large role in my diet. Come on, I live in Wisconsin! Not eating cheese here is a SIN. The stomach aches persist, and sometimes they're bad enough to make me throw up. I go to the doctor and he tells me to take Metamucil every day. I do that and eventually my stomach aches go away.

December: The stomach aches begin to return but they're not persistent.

January: One night I notice my mouth was very itchy. The next morning it was fine. Later that day though the itchiness returned. I didn't know what to do about it so I did nothing. That night though I woke up and my tongue was swollen with hives. I looked online how to cure hives and read that antihistamines are most commonly used to get rid of them. Thankfully I had some Zyrtec in the house because I have summer allergies from mowing the lawn. 30 minutes after taking the Zyrtec my tongue was fine and the itchiness went away.

I go to the doctor to talk about the tongue episode, and while I'm there my head is really red and itchy, but I had just gotten my hair done the night before. We both figured my head was red from the hair dye. We schedule an appointment with an allergist so I can get tested and finally know what I'm allergic to. Appointment isn't until March 9th.

February: The stomach aches are more persistent with vomiting almost once a week. At this point I'm taking Zyrtec every day to keep the hives away. Hives are almost constantly on the under side of my fore arms. If avoidance is key, I've had absolutely no idea what to avoid. I've been trying to think of everything under the sun I could be allergic to: Latex, lotion, soap, aloe, laundry detergent, new clothes. Because my symptoms manifest themselves on my skin, I was thinking in terms of things that contact my skin.

Last weekend: We were visiting my wife's sister's family. My sister-in-law is a cook and so we had a really awesome meal. About 30 minutes after eating, my head started itching. I pulled down the collar of my shirt and saw some hives forming. I took a Zyrtec right away. About 30 minutes later the hives were gone but I had a really bad stomach ache and had to throw up. I completely emptied the contents of my stomach and felt fine.

Tonight we had a breakthrough. My wife made Hamburger Helper. About 30 minutes after eating the same thing started happening. Hives followed by a bad stomach ache. I told my wife I thought I had it narrowed down to foods with milk/dairy, but hamburger helper doesn't have dairy. But wait, IT DOES! My wife told me the recipe calls for a cup of milk! AH HA! So I took a Zyrtec but then spent the next hour throwing up and having severe stomach pains. Now I can't take another pill because I might over dose, but the hives are horrible. This is most definitely the worst allergic reaction I've ever had in my life to anything. My head is on fire, my shoulders are itchy, and I've got red spots over most of my upper body. I took pictures if anyone wants to see :)

Sometimes great discoveries require great sacrifice. Tonight's episode may have been painful at times, and I might have hives for the rest of the night, or until I can take another Zyrtec in about an hour, but now my wife and I finally know what's been going on with me for the last 9 months. I never would have guessed my stomach aches from last summer would tie into hives forming on my tongue. But it's all so clear now, especially after doing some research. My name is Brian Kline, and I have milk allergies.

ACK that blows! I have acid reflux so my stomach is pretty sensitive there was a point where I couldnt have dairy but I apparently have a "lucky" gift from my grandfather of having a hard time vomiting last time I threw up was I believe 8th grade and my grandmother made me force it *hot dr pepper and lemon* to get the crap outta me when I had the flu.. I still never forgave her for that XD she didnt TELL me what it would do. but then again I have a slight issue with emetophobia, any time I feel like I'm gonna vomit I tear up and have a nervous breakdown. no idea why, but I hate therapists anyway I've wrote enough here to make a blog of my own >_< sucks though. at least you figured it out before it causes more issues BUT look at the bright side.. this gives you the right to flip cows the bird when you pass a field

Funny, puking has always come so natural to me.

I also have pretty bad acid reflux. I have to watch what I eat or I'll be up all night. I've also found that my heart burn is worse if I lay on my right side, so I'm always laying on my left side.
But now my left shoulder hurts! ahh! What's a guy to do?

We just spent $2000 on a bed a couple years ago. It's totally comfortable. The most comfortable bed we tested. That's not the problem. I just can't sleep on my back. I've never been able to.

It's just a REALLY nice bed. Unfortunately it doesn't keep my daughter asleep... I'm tired. Want to go back to sleep...

Yup. She seems to rather enjoy waking up in the middle of the night for a bottle. Thankfully she goes back to sleep as soon as her stomach is full.

well I read in a medical book that apparently sleeping on your stomach is more comfortable than your back. no matter what I do I always wake up the same way... tangled in my blankets and complaining about it being to early to get up. then again I got this from the same book that apparently onions under your arm pits reduces nausea theres a lot of odd natural remedies out there I'm almost to afraid to try them.

In reality it's probably a mixed blessing that I'm allergic to dairy. Because of my genes I'm already predisposed to heart problems. My dad had a heart attack and his dad had a heart attack. I also have high cholesterol. So not eating so much saturated fat will end up being good for me.

It's pretty much who gets up first. I guess Babs woke up with her at 4:00 am this morning and I didn't even hear her crying. At least I don't remember hearing.

She sleeps in a crib in her own room. We have a monitor so we can hear when she wakes up. She slept in the room with us the first 3 months after she was born. After that we moved her into her room. We noticed she was getting woken up from our movements. If we coughed, or sniffled, she'd wake up. She started sleeping much better once we moved her to her room. We also let her cry a little. Some times she wakes up and cries for a bit but falls back to sleep. That way she learns to self sooth. If she was in the room with us we'd more than likely pick her up and calm her down. That would make her too attached to us. Sleeping is a very personal activity, even for a baby. Every person needs to learn to sleep by their self.

Well, I may not share your milk/dairy allergy......but I do have a food allergy.

For 6 or so years, I was addicted to Coca-Cola. I'd maybe down a liter or so a day, much to my parent's dismay.

Then the cramps started.

So now, even if i have maybe less than half a glass of Coke, I'll have stomach cramps and such for the rest of the night.

For the past 2 years, I haven't touched a drop of the stuff, and I actually found out that the acid had eaten my stomach away so much, that any carbonated drink will give me the same effect.

I hate water, so now I just live on that pre-mix Green Tea stuff in a bottle.

I know how ya feel to have an allergy to something so widely taken for granted.

Oh, and E1M1 is my ringtone :)

I guess you shouldn't have drank so much Coke :)

I should actually update this blog post. It turns out I do not have a dairy allergy, it was SOY that was doing it to me. It also turns out that soy is in just about everything, so avoidance has been difficult. But ever since I got tested I haven't had a single allergic reaction. I'm also allergic to bananas, apples, all pitted fruits, shrimp, crab, and most nuts. But I've avoided those things since I was a kid because they always made my mouth itch.

Man that really sucks. I don't have any allergies to food as far as I know. My sister has an ass load of them though. Dairy, wheat, bakers yeast,  soy, egg, and I can't even remember what else. It's all mild to moderate though.
