"Is she awake yet?" a desperate and insistent voice intruded into the deep fog that would not let Britt go.
Her eyes fluttered groggily as the shape of a head blocked out anything else there might be to be seen. The features refused to come into focus. Who was that? She tried to move, to rub her eyes, but her body refused to obey her.
"I have to know what happened!" the voice begged desperately. "How did you stop the bees?!"
Bees? Britt's sluggish, drug-laden brain had trouble making sense of anything. Slowly she remembered Mike, the desert and then the terrifying swarms. She gasped and made a small squeak as the memories began to come back.
"In the parking lot!" the voice insisted. "With Clyde! How'd you stop the bees? Britt! BRITT! I need you to remember?"
"U-h-h," was all Britt could say. It didn't matter because she didn't know. Her head shook side to side slightly.
"All right, all right," the voice at last conceded. "Keep on her!" it said to someone nearby out of Britt's vision. Sheriff Miner handed over a radio to Dr. Waermo. "Call immediately if she says anything I can use. I've got to get back out there."
"Lee!" the doctor called to him.
He held a hand up to silence her. "Don't say it, Liv! I can't just leave those people out there! This is about more than my duty."
"Don't make me say something I don't want to, to my sister and your kids!"
Lee glared at his sister-in-law before leaving the room.
