TRIC #21 FALL 2005

The Colorfield Theory, a four-piece from South Jersey, is comprised of
visual artists who believe (according to their myspace slogan), that
"sound is color." Hoping to blur the boundary between visual and aural
experience, their music is heavily textured and oh-so-dreamy. Their
first independent release, EP "Leave Here While You Can" has five
songs in the Shoegazer tradition. Easier on the ears than My Bloody
Valentine and less psychedelic than Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized, the
entire EP is chock full of melodic, beautifully, moody pop songs that
feel very warm and familiar. Maybe that’s because, according to the
band, they sound like "the dream you had last night." So how'd they do
that? The songs have layers of soothing yet distorted guitars and
subdued and quiet vocals. The songs float, but are not sappy or
sugary. The guitars are accessible fuzz, not dense or dark. However,
there are moments when the guitars are used for maximum impact, as in
the opener "Purple Sky" and in the song "Can," where the guitars come
on strong and intense, flooding over you in waves. Not bad for a first
release, and I look forward to the day when these guys are on the same
bill as another local "nu-gazer" band Dragon City, so I can see whose
guitars are louder on stage. Check out www.myspace.com/thecolorfield
