Spirit Wins Home Opener, beating Knights 5-2

(Saginaw, MI)  The Saginaw Spirit beat the London Knights 5-2 at their home opener Wednesday night.  Tyler Murovich contributed 2 points for the Spirit. The win starts the Spirit off with a 1-0 record and 2 points for the season.

The first point of the home opener was scored by Spirit center Tyler Murovich, with a powerplay goal at 9:50 in the first period. Spirit winger Joe Pleckaitis and defenseman Cody Sol assisted on the play. Center Barry Sanderson and defenseman Joe Underwood assisted Pleckaitis in notching the second goal for the Spirit at 11:43. The team continued to advance over the knights as Spirit winger Jason McDonough received a pass from winger Jakub Svoboda to put the Spirit ahead, 3-0. The Knights' first goal was scored at 12:17 on a power play by center Jared Knight, assisted by winger Chris MacKinnon and center Nazem Kadri. The first period ended with the Spirit ahead 3-1.

Murovich scored his second goal of the game at 10:21 in the second period, moving the Spirit closer to a win. Pleckaitis and Sanderson were credited with the assists. The Knights added a point at 11:46 with a goal from winger Daniel Erlich, assisted by defenseman Vladimir Roth. With 20 seconds remaining in the period, Spirit winger Kyle Tront scored his first point of the season. The powerplay goal was assisted by defenseman Christopher Breen and winger Joe Pleckaitis.

Goaltender Edward Pasquale posted 18 saves in net for the Spirit. London netminder Jason Guy had 22 saves and Michael Zador finished the game with 4 saves.
