I went out for a farewell party from Edinburgh on Wednesday night. An old mate was working the gate at the Silent Disco and got free tickets for me. The concept is simple and brilliant: two DJs playing in the same room but with no loudspeakers - they broadcast to headphones. You can set which channel to listen to but the most fun is when you take them off. The room is silent but for the sound of people dancing and trying to sing along to lyrics they never quite learnt. The setting was the magnificent McEwan Hall on Bristo Square. A couple of Dutch guys started the idea and they have played at Glastonbury, T in the Park and more. If you bought a cocktail from the Smirnoff sponsored drinks bar outside you received a voucher which could be redeemed for a costume item - shades, feather boas, hats and, oddly, inflatable guitars or saxophones.
