NEWSWIRE AUGUST, 2008
- July was a super eventful month with many major happenings taking place.
- In the biggest piece of news, on 6 July at Blacktown RSL at Championship Climax, Il Cognito defeated TNT, Steve Ravenous & Mark Hilton to become new AWF Australasian Champion! The fall came after 20 minutes when TNT was setting up for his top rope crazyjack twisting elbow, when outsider Blakestone interfered throwing a chair at TNT's head, sending him flipping into the ring. Il Cognito capitalized with a second rope springboard legdrop and scored his 3rd AWF Title reign. With Il Cognito as new AWF Australasian Champion this has switched the main balance of power in AWF to "The Freakshow". Things are set to get crazy. In initial title
- "Platinum Player" JT Robinson will cash in his AWF Title shot for winning Supa Tournament Perth, as he is set to face Il Cognito in a Campbelltown Street Fight anything goes bout at the Cube on 30 August.
- Jay Law will face the winner of the 30 August Championship bout at Fairy Meadow the week after on 5 September, after petitioning for an Australasian Championship bout for some time based on his win loss record.
- The fallout of July's Championship Climax also saw many other major happenings. In huge news Mark Hilton has decided to step away from the wrestling ring for the meantime to pursue his Mixed Martial Arts career. Hilton is a black belt in many martial arts and has been preparing to do more MMA for some time. To give himself the focus he needs, Mark will dedicate all his energy to MMA to give him the best possible chance for success. The top AWF fan favourite sent his appreciation to the fans for all their support and says they may see him again at AWF shows in the future. AWF management and wrestlers thank Mark for his massive contribution to AWF, and wish him the best in his MMA pursuits. We will be there to support him all the way! Good luck champ.
- TNT was named wrestler of the January to July Season, with him remaining AWF Australasian Champion throughout most of the period. TNT's only singles blemish saw him losing the Australasian Championship to Raven in Penrith on 11 April, in which he bounced back to win the title back a week later in New Zealand in the rematch on 18 April. Runners up were Mark Hilton, Raven & Powerhouse Theo. Young Lion of the season went to Jay Law, Tag Team to Surf Club, Future prospect Bluey Bonza, and match of the season TNT Vs Taku Iwasa Blacktown 1 March.
- AWF will be enstating a new Commonwealth Championship, to be presented to the winner of the 2 day tournament to take place in New Zealand on 3& 4 October. The title will be initially defended mainly in New Zealand. The design for the championship belt has been created to reflect the history of the old title, plus to incorporate the modern look today's championship belts. Major participants already named for the tournament include TNT, AJ Freely, D-Hoya, Roger Ventura and Jay Law. Full 16 name field will be named next month.
- Enraged by losing the AWF Australasian Title, TNT made a rare appearance at an outside wrestling promotion, as he challenged and defeated Blakestone on July 11 in Marrickville, NSW for Nightmare Wrestling. An aggressive TNT downed the larger Blakestone on enemy turf, and then wrestlers from Nightmare attacked Blakestone after the bout. TNT Vs Blakestone 2 has been signed for the AWF ring as part of the huge August 30 Cube Campbelltown event.
- Championship Climax also saw Bombshell Bo dismissed from AWF by rival Alison Wonderland. Bo finished up her commitments on 12 July teaming with Swat Team X, finally getting her win over Alison Wonderland, who teamed with Massive Q & Toxin. After the bout TNT & Powerhouse Theo joined their other Detonation Crew members and publicly sent off Bo wishing her well. Bo will now go overseas for some time to gain more experience and will possibly return after her AWF suspension period is over.
- The new semester of the AWF School of Pro-Wrestling has began, with many new students taking the steps to learn the ropes of pro-wrestling and make it to the AWF ring. AWF management wishes all our new students well with their endeavours to become professional wrestlers and look forward to seeing their development over the coming year. For those who are interested in joining the February – April, 2009 Beginners intake, applications are now open, so email info@awfwrestling.com.au to receive your application forms and reserve your spot for next years course.
- AWF funny man Max Comic has been making a name for himself with some priceless imitations of AWF wrestlers. On 6 July, Comic sneakily filled in as a Platinum Player for the evening as he cheap shotted Surf Club, then went on to team with JT Robinson, in full Kid Dynamite get up! After Comic cost his team the win, JT Robinson flattened him and left him laying. Comic's next parody saw him scream "3-2-1 It's Immitation Time!" as he appeared as Bombshell Bo's mystery partner against Massive Q & Alison Wonderland on 11 July. TNT had helped Comic upset Q at Fairy Meadow on 4 July, and Comic thought he would fill in return the favour whilst TNT was battling Blakestone elsewhere. TNT was apparently not so amused, as the next night in Niagara Park, TNT handed Comic a humiliating loss, however appearing to still be somewhat friendly with Max at the aftermath of the bout. Whilst not resulting in victories, Max's antics have been somewhat entertaining, and it will be interesting to see what he has in store for gags at upcoming events.
