The Joys of Hand Drumming

Out here in Eastern Oregon there are lots and lots of guitar player. You can't turn over a rock without several dozen of them scurrying away from the light… and yes I am now one of them. I was converted to the dark side recently, but I am still trying to be faithful to my bass. What has this to do with drumming???

Well let me tell you…

I picked up the guitar to expand my musical horizons and to help my songwriting, but I have also found another instrument that has been very helpful… you guessed it, a hand drum. Drumming even more than the bass takes you down to your core rhythms and focuses you on timing. When your working over a nice drum you actually move beyond hearing into the feeling zone and it can be very liberating and inspirational as well. Traditional bands and drums should try out hand drumming to add and extra dimension to their music.

Other things about hand drums…

Hand drums are really cool because… they offer access to a wider range of players than traditional drum kits do. Age is not an issue (we have an 84 year-old lady come to some of our drumming circles). "Knowing" how to play is not a requirement, most people can instinctively recreate basic rhythmus and easily learn more, and they are affordable.

Hand drumming can also be a great communal activity, especially when you get together with a drumming circle. Drumming circles can be a great way to interact with other people, make new friends, learn new stuff and show off your latest chops. So wherever you are check out the local music scene and find a drumming circle and start having fun.

Lastly, hand drumming can be very therapeutic! Nothing relieves my stress like banging on a drum! The rhythmus can be both soothing and energetic. I always come away from our monthly drumming circles feeling both relaxed and invigorate.

So start hand drumming today!

Marilyn's Music sponsors a drumming circle on the first Saturday of every month right in our store, 5-7. You can bring your own or try one of ours.

Peace,
Tim
